Oxford 0-1 Oldham
Oxford suffered the indignity of becoming the first side to be relegated this
season as they crashed to defeat at the hands of Oldham.
David Eyres drove home a fierce last-minute free-kick to condemn United to the bottom division for the first time since 1965. The Us had to win to keep their slim chances of survival alive and they missed a series of chances. Several opportunities fell to leading scorer Phil Gray, but Latics goalkeeper Gary Kelly dealt comfortably with his efforts. Gray also went close with an overhead kick but his efforts proved to be in vain.
Oxford Utd: Knight, Robertson, Hatswell, Richardson, Patterson, Ricketts, Beauchamp, Tait, Quinn, Gray, Scott. Subs: Wilson, Murphy, Hackett, Anthrobus, Fear. Oldham: Kelly, McNiven, Innes, Garnett, Prenderville, Hotte, Duxbury, Sheridan, Carss, Eyres, Tipton. Subs: Miskelly, Parkin, Corazzin, Allott, Futcher. Referee: F Stretton (Nottingham).
