Middlesbrough   2 - 1   Watford

Highlights - Middlesbrough v Watford

Middlesbrough 2-1 Watford

Middlesbrough brought Watford's five-game unbeaten run to a juddering halt as goals from Scott McDonald and Andrew Taylor sealed the points.

The visitors made a promising start when Don Cowie fed Danny Graham for the striker's sixth goal in six games.

But McDonald quickly equalised, firing in Barry Robson's right-wing cross, and Taylor added a second when keeper Scott Loach parried a Robson shot to him.

Watford's afternoon got even worse when Adrian Mariappa was sent off late on.

The defender received a second yellow card in the 88th minute after for hauling down Marvin Emnes.

The defeat, which means Watford drop a place to ninth in the Championship table, arrested the momentum established by a five-game unbeaten run to which Graham has been central.

The erstwhile Boro striker's sixth goal in as many games, which came in the 28th minute, looked destined to extend that run.

But his former club, struggling at the opposite end of the table, had other ideas.

Graham's goal came against the run of play, but the rapid intervention of McDonald and Taylor ensured the hosts went in ahead at the break.

Buoyed by the turnaround, Boro bossed the second half, with Taylor threatening to double his tally only to see his goalbound shot blocked by Mariappa.

There was a nervous moment for Boro when a Graham effort was saved by keeper Paul Smith, but Mariappa's dismissal put the brakes on any Watford revival.

The win moves Boro to 18th, nine points clear of the bottom three.
