Ipswich   2 - 0   Scunthorpe

Ipswich 2-0 Scunthorpe

Ipswich 2-0 Scunthorpe

Carlos Edwards and Jimmy Bullard sealed the points for Ipswich as Scunthorpe's hopes of staying in the Championship were dealt another damaging blow.

Edwards opened the scoring for Ipswich in spectacular fashion, rifling home a 30-yard effort from David Mirfin's attempted defensive clearance.

Bullard stretched the home side's lead eight minutes after the break, curling home a 25-yard free-kick.

Connor Wickham threatened to cause more damage as the Iron were overrun.

The defeat meant a disappointing start to the caretaker tenure of Tony Daws, who took up the reins at Glanford Park after manager Ian Baraclough was sacked following the 3-0 home defeat to Preston in midweek.

The visitors were powerless to avert a fifth successive defeat - eight in a row away from home - and are now one loss away from equalling their club-record of nine consecutive away losses, which dates back to 1973.

Ipswich had lost three games in a row at Portman Road but a dominant performance ensured there was never likely to be a fourth.

Captain David Norris, restored to the side more swiftly than expected following an ankle injury, had a third-minute effort saved by Josh Lillis, heralding the start of a busy afternoon for the Scunthorpe keeper.

Bullard had a shot blocked by defender David Mirfin before sending in a dangerous free-kick to Wickham, who volleyed wide from close range.

A Michael O'Connor free-kick, well saved by the returning Ipswich keeper Arran Lee-Barrett, represented a rare opportunity for the Iron, but they soon fell behind to Edwards' stunning long-range effort.

Bullard set up Lee Martin for an effort which went just wide, but within eight minutes of the restart he had doubled the home side's advantage, bending home a free-kick after a foul on Norris.

Both Bullard and Wickham missed further chances as Ipswich ran out comfortable winners.
