Burnley   2 - 2   Coventry

Burnley 2-2 Coventry

Burnley 2-2 Coventry

Jay Rodriguez scored a goal in each half but Burnley's play-off ambitions were dealt a blow as managerless Coventry grabbed a deserved point.

The Sky Blues, who sacked Aidy Boothroyd on Monday, went behind when Rodriguez lobbed Keiren Westwood.

Coventry levelled when Lukas Jutkiewicz headed in and they looked on course for their second win in 16 matches when Gary McSheffrey curled into the corner.

But Rodriguez nicked a point for Burnley by heading in on 79 minutes.

The result leaves Burnley three points shy of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest with a game in hand, while Coventry edge eight points clear of the bottom three.

Under the stewardship of chief scout Andy Thorn, Coventry started brightly and in the third minute Jutkiewicz hit a volley on the turn that drew a magnificent one-handed save from Burnley goalkeeper Lee Grant.

The hosts looked disjointed but took the lead when Tyrone Mears found Rodriguez 30 yards from goal, where a clever touch took the England Under-21 forward clear of centre-back Richard Keogh and gave him space to coolly lob onrushing keeper Westwood.

City were strong again after the break and after Jutkiewicz missed a chance to level matters, he headed home after an initial effort hit the bar.

Coventry continued to press and looked like they would grab a deserved win when McSheffrey beat Jack Cork to a loose ball on the right flank, turned into the box to evade two more challenges and curled a delicate left-footed effort beyond Grant into the top corner.

But Burnley hit back 11 minutes from time when Rodriguez nodded in from a Danny Fox corner.
