Derby   2 - 1   Swansea

Highlights - Derby 2-1 Swansea

Derby 2-1 Swansea

Derby County beat high-flying Swansea to earn their first victory at Pride Park for almost four months and ease their Championship relegation fears.

An own goal from Swans defender Ashley Williams gave the hosts the lead, his back pass catching out keeper Dorus De Vries and rolling over the goal-line.

Williams then hit the bar for Swansea before Steve Davies' header from Conor Doyle's corner doubled Derby's lead.

Substitute Darren Pratley scored a late consolation from Angel Rangel's cross.

Swansea's Pratley got the better of the Derby defence to beat County keeper Frank Fielding in the air and nod the right-wing centre home.

Swansea cling onto the Championship's second automatic promotion spot despite defeat as rivals Cardiff and Norwich play on Sunday and Monday respectively.

But Queens Park Rangers' lead at the top is extended to 10 points after their win against Crystal Palace.

Swansea should have taken the lead early on but centre-back Williams, unmarked at the back post, could not head Mark Gower's right-wing cross on target from five yards out.

But Williams' calamitous own goal moments later gifted their struggling hosts a morale-boosting lead.

Metgod praises 'magnificent' Derby

Derby midfielder Paul Green put pressure on the Wales international 25 yards from his own goal but Williams' strong back pass, from the left hand side of his box, caught out De Vries.

The Dutchman tried desperately to spare Williams' embarrassment but De Vries' efforts were in vain as Derby showed the battling spirit needed for a relegation scrap.

But Williams made amends for his howler when he put his head between Jamie Ward's close-range headed effort and the goal as Nigel Clough's men looked to calm any potential jitters.

However, for all the hosts' energy and tenacity, it was Swansea who had the clearer goal-scoring opportunities.

And Williams, who was heavily involved early on, went close to scoring at the right end when his thumping header from Gower's teasing right-wing cross crashed off Fielding's bar.

Swansea 'presented Derby two goals'

Swans top-scorer Scott Sinclair has often come to the Welsh side's rescue this season but the winger somehow missed an open goal just before the break following good work from Stephen Dobbie.

Scotsman Dobbie danced past Daniel Ayala and whipped the ball low across the Derby six-yard box but with the goal gaping, Sinclair failed to properly connect when the England Under-21 international seemed set to score his 22nd of the season.

Brendan Rodgers stated his dissatisfaction with Swansea's poor first-half when the boss threw on dynamic midfield duo Leon Britton and Pratley for Luke Moore and Gower at half-time.

But Derby made the task doubly difficult for Swansea just after the interval when the visiting defence watched Davies head Doyle's right-wing corner into the net at the back post.

The midfielder's second goal in successive games gave Clough's men hope that they could secure a league triumph over Swansea for the first time since 1986.

And his strike was just as well as Pratley rose to conquer Rangel's cross for his eighth goal of the season and throw the Swans a lifeline.

But Swansea also had stopper De Vries to thank for keeping his side in the game.

He made a great stop from Davies following more hesitant defending from Williams as De Vries tipped the Derby man's shot around the post after Davies bulldozed the Swans defender off the ball.

The visitors again struck the woodwork minutes later after Dobbie's shot was deflected onto the bar just before Pratley fired narrowly as Swansea applied relentless late pressure.

Sinclair then poked wide after as he tried to capitalise on Miles Addison's error but Derby substitute Theo Robinson wasted a glorious chance to make the points certain.

Stephen Pearson pinched the ball ahead off Alan Tate to feed Alberto Bueno and as Derby broke, the Spanish striker set up Robinson but he fired over from inside the penalty box with just De Vries to beat.

The relief around Pride Park was palpable at full-time as Derby celebrated their first home win since 20 November to move them nine points clear of the dreaded drop zone.

Swansea, however, are equalling their worst run this season at the wrong time as their promotion bid has been dealt a blow with their third game without a win.
