Scunthorpe   1 - 0   Swansea

Scunthorpe 1-0 Swansea

Scunthorpe 1-0 Swansea

Joe Garner's 71st minute penalty against Swansea gave Scunthorpe United a vital win in their battle against relegation from the Championship.

Swansea had enough chances to win a fifth game on the trot, but defeat ended the promotion-chasers' four-match winning run.

Garner set up his own penalty chance, beating Ashley Williams before Alan Tate brought him down in the box.

The striker smashed home from the penalty spot to seal the win.

However, with Swansea's Welsh rivals Cardiff City later losing 2-0 to Ipswich and other results going their way, Brendan Rodgers' side remain second in the table behind Queens Park Rangers.

Scott Sinclair's pace earned him an early chance, but Scunthorpe goalkeeper Josh Lillis comfortably dealt with the threat.

At the other end Dorus de Vries had no problems thwarting Michael Collins' attempt to open the scoring for the hosts.

But as the contest settled down, the pattern of play favoured the high-flying visitors as they created a glut of chances, but they were unable to take advantage.

Joe Allen played a superb double one-two, first via Nathan Dyer's touch and then with Craig Beattie, but a bobbling ball prevented Allen having a clean shot.

Mark Gower then saw a shot that seemed to be heading for the top corner take a deflection.

De Vries was equal to Garner's tight-angled shot that served as a reminder of the threat the embattled hosts posed.

And the visitors' frustration continued when Dyer played Beattie into their best scoring chance only for the striker to fire over the bar with only Lillis to beat.

Ben Gordon's effort after an attack that took the Swans by surprise drew a fantastic save from de Vries.

But that merely served to give Scunthorpe confidence and they soon took advantage of the visitors' defensive frailties.

Garner skipped past Williams and as he glided past Tate, the defender committed the foul to concede the penalty.

De Vries went the wrong way as Garner's shot flew into the back of the net to end the stalemate.

Gordon and Garner each had a chance in the same frantic passage of play to seal the victory the latter was beaten by the woodwork.

De Vries was equal to Lee Miller's run and shot and another chance that fell to him hit an upright.
