Preston   1 - 2   Burnley

Jay Rodriguez

Preston 1-2 Burnley

Jack Cork's late winner for play-off chasing Burnley pushed rock-bottom Preston North End closer to relegation.

In-form Preston midfielder Barry Nicholson fired in a fine opener but the visitors soon hit back as Jay Rodriguez rifled in low.

Burnley winger Chris Eagles shot just wide from 12 yards before the break.

And with both sides pushing for a late winner, on-loan Chelsea midfielder Cork scored with a diving header to settle the match six minutes from time.

Preston are still without a first win since Phil Brown took charge last month, though their performances continue to improve.

The hosts - now five points adrift of second-from-bottom Sheffield United - began brightly as Billy Jones hit a fierce shot from 30 yards just wide after five minutes.

They threatened again three minutes later when striker Nathan Ellington's 20-yard shot was blocked by Cork.

But Burnley had chances too and Eagles engineered the space to hit a 20-yard shot which on-loan Everton goalkeeper Iain Turner blocked well.

Ian Ashbee just missed from 25 yards for Preston but they led moments later when Nicholson finished off a fine flowing move after latching on to a pass from Paul Coutts to sweep in a 12-yard shot.

The Clarets steadied themselves and soon hit back, in the 32nd minute, as Rodriguez picked up a pass from Eagles to fire in clinically.

Shortly after the restart, Rodriguez had a shot blocked by David Gray and at the other end Coutts had an effort thwarted by defender Clarke Carlisle.

Eagles came increasingly to the fore for the visitors who, six minutes from time, sealed the points when Wade Elliott crossed from the right flank for the onrushing Cork to head the winner.
