Coventry   0 - 1   Swansea

Coventry v Swansea

Coventry 0-1 Swansea

Substitute Stephen Dobbie struck four minutes after coming off the bench to send Swansea City up to second in the Championship table.

Dobbie, who moments earlier hit the post, saw Coventry keeper Kieren Westwood off his line and hooked the ball home for his fifth of the season.

But the Swans had to survive intense pressure from Coventry before making the breakthrough.

David Bell, Marlon King and Lucas Jutkiewicz all saw chances saved.

Dobbie's goal, his first since 28 September, was enough to propel the Swans into the second automatic promotion spot after Nottingham Forest were held by bottom club Preston.

The Swans are a point clear of arch-rivals Cardiff in third and two ahead of Forest in fourth, although they do have a game in hand over both Welsh clubs.

But Coventry, who have faded after a bright start to the season and drop to 16th in the table, will wonder how they did not get something from the game.

After surviving early pressure from Swansea, whose best chance fell to a Craig Beattie snap-shot, boss Aidy Boothroyd's Coventry took control, but they could not find a way past the excellent Dorus de Vries.

First, Richard Wood saw his downward header from David Bell's corner palmed away by the Dutch stopper, and then Irishman Bell had a shot turned over by De Vries' fingertips.

De Vries was fortunate not to concede a penalty after the restart when he appeared to pull Jutkiewicz's shirt.

Rodgers hails 'great performance'

The Swans were thankful again to De Vries on the hour when he had to push away King's 20-yard free kick before Alan Tate blocked a Jutkiewicz effort.

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers threw on Dobbie and Luke Moore with 18 minutes remaining and the duo almost made an instant impact.

The visitors broke quickly and Dobbie cut inside before firing under Westwood and striking the post.

Moore stepped up to meet the rebound, but he hit the bar and then Scott Sinclair sent his header from that rebound against the post.

The winner came though four minutes after Dobbie's arrival when he lifted Nathan Dyer's pass over the helpless Westwood and into the bottom right-hand corner.
