Nott'm Forest   2 - 1   Cardiff

Nottingham Forest v Cardiff

Nottingham Forest 2-1 Cardiff

Robert Earnshaw sent Nottingham Forest back up to second in the Championship with the winner against former club Cardiff in a thrilling encounter.

Wes Morgan put Forest ahead with his first goal of the season, heading home Lewis McGugan's corner.

Peter Whittingham levelled from the spot after Paul McKenna was adjudged to have fouled Seyi Olofinjana in the box.

But Earnshaw sealed the points for Forest, slotting home Paul Anderson's pass from six yards.

It was the perfect response for Billy Davies' side, who slumped to a shock defeat at the hands of struggling Scunthorpe in midweek.

Forest are now five points behind leaders Queens Park Rangers - who were held by bottom club Preston - and have a game in hand over the rest of the teams around them.

Cardiff will see the defeat, which brings their seven-match unbeaten run to an end, as an opportunity missed to close the gap on QPR themselves after creating the better chances.

But the script was written for Earnshaw, who thought he had put them ahead against his former club inside five minutes, only to see the offside flag raised.

That early let-off spurred Cardiff on and the Bluebirds' first chance fell to Craig Bellamy soon after.

Kevin McNaughton cut inside from the left and squared to the on-loan Manchester City striker to launch a 20-yard strike which goalkeeper Lee Camp had to parry to safety.

Then on 14 minutes, Jay Bothroyd beat the offside trap to meet Chris Burke's through-ball but the excellent Camp raced out to deflect the shot with his legs.

And from the resulting corner, the ball fell to Bellamy on the edge of the box and he drove the ball through a crowd of players but on-loan Liverpool defender Paul Konchesky cleared off the line.

Cardiff defeat disappoints boss Dave Jones

Cardiff continued to create the better chances and Whittingham turned cleverly before curling a 20-yard shot just around Camp's right-hand post.

But the visitors were to rue those missed opportunities as Forest took the lead on 32 minutes.

Chris Cohen won the initial corner with a cheeky cross-come-shot which Bluebirds keeper Tom Heaton had to see out to be sure.

And McGugan's delivery was met at the far post by Morgan who climbed above Mark Hudson to head home.

McGugan could have made it 2-0 five minutes later when he was picked out by Paul Anderson but he sent his first-time shot from 12 yards rattling against the bar.

Cardiff needed something to get back into the game, so boss Dave Jones threw on Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Stephen McPhail for Jon Parkin and Burke.

Earnshaw reflects on 'bitter-sweet' winner

And apart from a McGugan free kick, which just missed the top corner, the substitutions appeared to turn the tide in Cardiff's favour.

First, Bothroyd skipped into the box from the right and Konchesky's interception fed the ball into Olofinjana's path to strike first time and forced the excellent Camp into a fine save.

And on 64 minutes, Cardiff were awarded a controversial penalty when McKenna was adjudged to have fouled Olofinjana on the edge of the six-yard box, despite replays showing he appeared to win the ball first.

Whittingham stepped up to send Camp the wrong way for his sixth of the season, and within a minute, Emmanuel-Thomas launched a fierce 25-yard shot which Camp had to stop with his legs.

The top-of-the-table clash was wide open and Cardiff were almost hit on the break, ending with Morgan having a shot on goal - but Heaton smothered his weak attempt.

The winner came midway through the second half when ex-Swansea loanee Anderson picked out Earnshaw to fire past Heaton at the near post from six yards.

Nathan Tyson could have helped make sure of the win eight minutes from time in a three-on-one break, but instead of passing, he took it himself and Heaton saved.
