Ipswich   1 - 1   Hull

Ipswich v Hull

Ipswich 1-1 Hull

Hull extended their unbeaten league run to eight games after Jay Simpson's late equaliser at Ipswich.

The home side had dominated the first half without finding the net before the much-coveted Connor Wickham set up Jason Scotland on 58 minutes.

Scotland still had plenty to do, however, cutting in from the left and scoring via the far post.

Ipswich seemed comfortable until Simpson headed home from Corry Evans's cross with five minutes to go.

After a hat-trick in the home side's midweek rout at Doncaster, the eyes of many scouts were trained on Wickham as he impressed again at the heart of most of Ipswich's attacks.

The 17-year-old set up Lee Martin for an early chance and could have given his side a first-half lead when his goal-bound effort was cleared by Andy Dawson.

Amidst all of the home pressure, Hull came close to snatching a goal when Tijani Belaid's audacious free-kick grazed the bar from 40 yards.

Grant Leadbitter was also a threat with his long-range shooting for Ipswich, forcing Brad Guzan into a decent save.

Wickham was again lively in the second half and his pass found Scotland on the left edge of the box, the striker then shooting low past Guzan to put the home side ahead.

Aaron Mclean came closest to threatening Marton Fulop's goal, before Simpson - making his first appearance in more than a month - came off the bench to grab a point for Nigel Pearson's side with a flicked header from 12 yards.

Ipswich manager Paul Jewell:

"We looked a bit tired in the last 15 minutes.

"I thought we deserved to win on the balance of play but there's only one stat that counts and that's the goals.

"But at least we're making progress and that's the most important thing. It was as well as we've played since I've been here.

"I thought we were terrific and the only thing lacking was goals. Some of the football we played in the first half especially was scintillating."

Hull manager Nigel Pearson on Jay Simpson:

"It was a clever header for the goal. He had a lot to do, to manipulate the ball like that.

"Jay's had a frustrating time. He's been out of the side and it was a good response for him.

"He's had to be patient and probably feels he hasn't had a fair crack of the whip, but it illustrates that you need a squad ethic to be successful.

"I'm very pleased for him because he probably felt he had a point to prove."
