Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace 1-0 Sheffield Utd

By Paul Fletcher
BBC Sport at Selhurst Park

Darren Ambrose scored with a sensational 25-yard volley as Crystal Palace boosted their prospects of Championship survival and heaped the pressure on struggling Sheffield United.

Ambrose struck after the break as the Eagles won for the second time since the Dougie Freedman was appointed manager on 11 January.

Palace remain fourth from bottom but they are now five points clear of the Blades, who are 22nd in the table and have not yet won since Micky Adams took over at the turn of the year.

The Blades certainly created chances at Selhurst Park but they have gone 11 games without a victory in the Championship since they defeated Swansea in mid-December.

The struggling Yorkshire side now face a crucial match against fellow-strugglers Scunthorpe on Tuesday, who are now only one point behind the Blades and with two games in hand.

United had scored only three goals in their previous six games coming into Saturday's contest but they dominated the opening exchanges at Selhurst Park and wasted a superb opportunity to take an early lead when an unmarked Neill Collins headed wide from six yards.

Palace, who have now lost only one of their last six league games, countered and Wilfried Zaha slipped James Vaughan through on goal with a precise low pass but the Eagles striker shot over from the edge of the area.

United continued to press and Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne cleared off the line after a corner struck the knee of Blades skipper Richard Cresswell and flew towards goal.

The Blades looked to pepper the Palace area with as many crosses as possible and one almost resulted in a goal but Eagles skipper Paddy McCarthy headed inches wide of his own goal as he cleared the danger.

Ambrose, who struck 20 goals last season, had not scored in his previous nine games but went close with a spectacular 30-yard strike that Blades keeper Steve Simonsen spectacularly saved.

The Eagles winger tested Simonsen again with a low strike before the break but the match was becoming increasingly fractious, with poor passes and awry shots undermining the play of both teams.

There were precious few chances after the restart, although Palace full-back Dean Moxey did at least force a save from Simonsen with a crisp low strike.

The home team brought on Sean Scannell to try to give them some attacking impetus and he was involved in the build-up to Palace's goal.

Scannell and Vaughan worked the ball to Ambrose, who took an initial touch with his thigh before smashing his right-foot strike beyond the despairing dive of Simonsen.

Adams immediately brought on strike duo Marcus Bent and Ched Evans and the Yorkshire club forced a couple of goal-mouth scrambles, but it was Palace who created the games remaining clear-cut opening.

A devastating counter attack enabled Scanell to lay the ball invitingly into the path of goalscorer Ambrose, but this time he drilled his shot wastefully over the crossbar.
