Bristol City   0 - 2   Swansea

By David Dulin
BBC Sport Wales at Ashton Gate

A Darren Pratley double fired Swansea City into third and condemned Bristol City to their fourth defeat in five.

The former Fulham midfielder volleyed in his first from just inside the box after the hosts were unable to clear.

And Pratley claimed his ninth of the season midway through the second half, finishing at the near post.

Outclassed Bristol City's best chance fell to debutant and ex-Cardiff striker Andy Keogh, whose close-range header was saved by keeper Dorus de Vries.

The win sets up Swansea nicely for Sunday's south Wales derby against arch rivals Cardiff, who are fifth after being held at home to Reading.

But for Bristol City, they will be looking nervously over their shoulders at the wrong end of the Championship table, following their failure to score for the fifth successive game.

The hosts started brightly but Swansea took the lead with their first attack.

Striker Luke Moore was allowed to skip into the box and it took a last-ditch tackle by Marvin Elliott to stop him. But the Bristol City defender's challenge sent the ball into the path of Pratley on the edge of the box and he lifted the ball into the net with a neat volley.

Swansea had not scored at Ashton Gate since August 2003, but almost notched their second goal of the evening when Moore turned on the edge of the six-yard box only to see his shot was blocked by Stewart.

And moments later, Moore forced David James into his first save as the former England goalkeeper had to dive low to parry his 25-yard shot as they dominated proceedings.

The Robins spent much of their time chasing the ball and their best chance fell to Keogh. Captain Louis Carey floated a cross in from the right which the Wolves loanee headed goal-bound but Swans stopper De Vries dived well to deny him.

That was the only real sight the home side had at goal in the first-half - but there was still time for the Swans to threaten James' goal again in what was an excellent first 45 minutes.

Gower delivered a corner from the right and Moore met it at close range at the near post, but his header cleared the bar.

Robins boss Keith Millen switched to 4-3-3 at the break and threw on Jamie McAllister and Kalifa Cisse for Damion Stewart and Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

They looked a different side after the restart, attacking the Swans defence at a high tempo, but the visitors weathered the early storm and took charge once again.

First, Sinclair cut inside from the Swansea left and fired low at James, before Nathan Dyer cut in from the right and the ball fell to Moore, whose shot ricocheted away for a corner.

And on the hour, Moore was allowed to race into the box but James was on hand to dive at his feet and deny him.

Bristol City then thought Brett Pitman's deflected curling shot from the edge of the box was heading in before De Vries made a brilliant one-handed reaction save, and Albert Adomah also headed wide.

The Robins were to rue that missed chance as Swansea went up the other end and scored from a corner.

Mark Gower delivered to the near post and Pratley scrambled the ball home to seal Swansea's first win at Ashton Gate in 18 years.
