Cardiff   4 - 2   Watford

Gabor Gyepes of Cardiff celebrates

Cardiff City 4-2 Watford

Cardiff City survived a brave Watford fight-back as a late Gabor Gyepes goal helped propel them into the top two.

Craig Bellamy broke the deadlock for Cardiff when he fired home at the second attempt.

Michael Chopra raced on to a pass by Jay Bothroyd for their second before a 20-yarder by Bothroyd made it three.

But Watford struck back through Will Buckley and a Marvin Sordell cross-shot before Gyepes's first goal of the season broke their plucky resistance.

The defeat was rough on a Watford side who had dominated for large parts of this showdown between promotional rivals.

And such a high-scoring thriller was little surprise given two of the Championship's top-scorers - who fought out a five-goal fixture last month - were going head-to-head.

But Cardiff, who were 3-0 up inside 31 minutes, were given an almighty scare by a Watford side aiming for a club record-equalling seventh successive league win.

Hungarian defender Gyepes, however, was the unlikely goal hero to seal just a fourth victory in 14 games for Dave Jones's stuttering side.

Watford 'pay-back' pleases Jones

Cardiff were keen to make amends for their 4-1 thrashing by Watford on 28 December, their heaviest defeat this season, but almost gifted the visitors an early lead.

Danny Graham capitalised on Lee Naylor's error but the Cardiff full-back, who was hauled off in the first-half of the reverse fixture, was rescued by Tom Heaton.

The Cardiff keeper was quickly off his line as the Watford striker was rushed into lashing his shot wide.

And Malky Mackay's men were left to rue that miss as Cardiff raced into a three-goal lead in the space of 16 minutes.

Peter Whittingham's pin-point 60-yard diagonal pass from deep sent Craig Bellamy free in the 16th minute.

And cutting in from the left, the Wales striker fired past Watford keeper Scott Loach for his third goal in five games with a sweet volley after his initial shot rebounded back to him.

Michael Chopra doubled the Cardiff lead within three minutes after the £4m player was sent through on goal by Bothroyd's delicate diagonal defence-splitting pass.

And the former Newcastle and Sunderland forward kept his composure to slide home his eighth goal of the season.

Bothroyd completes Cardiff's striking triumvirate and he ensured he was not left out of the scoring as he emulated Bellamy and Chopra by scoring on his return from injury.

The recent England call-up, who had been kept out for seven weeks with a hamstring strain, received Whittingham's lay-off and was allowed to turn and fire past Loach from 20 yards.

Bothroyd's 16th goal of the season just after the half-hour mark should have virtually sealed victory for last season's defeated play-off finalists.

But within two minutes, Will Buckley - Cardiff's chief tormentor at Vicarage Road last month - struck for a Watford, who were the form side in the country before kick-off.

The winger fired low into the left-hand corner of Heaton's net after Graham's lay-off as Watford fired a warning to Cardiff.

Bellamy and Seyi Olofinjana both had shots blocked for Cardiff just before half-time but Watford caused panic among the hosts when they pulled another goal back in the 48th minute.

Marvin Sordell's cross-come-shot deceived Heaton, who tripped as his retreated, in the Cardiff goal and dropped into the top left hand corner of the net.

The Watford striker's sixth goal in successive games caused doubts among Cardiff's players and anxious supporters in a game where they had been cruising to a seemingly straight-forward victory.

Watford looked to have levelled matters shortly before the hour mark but Buckley's flick was disallowed for offside

And the dominant visitors from Vicarage Road caused further Cardiff unease when Buckley's shot from just inside the box cannoned off the post.

Cardiff suffered further scares when top-scorer Bothroyd hobbled off with cramp and Whittingham went off - but the concerns were allayed by boss Jones afterwards.

Then Gyepes came to the rescue as the centre-back scored from close-range to move Cardiff level on points with Swansea and Norwich - but into second on goal difference.
