Crystal Palace   1 - 0   Preston

Crystal Palace 1-0 Preston North End

Crystal Palace 1-0 Preston North End

Steffen Iversen scored the winner on his Crystal Palace debut as the Eagles secured a narrow win over fellow strugglers Preston.

Iversen got on the end of a Kieron Cadogan cross to head home from close range in the second half.

Barry Nicholson spurned a golden chance to equalise when he headed wide from Billy Jones's cross.

Cadogan should have made the victory safe, but he struck wide when clean through on goal.

Iversen's goal proved enough to give caretaker boss Dougie Freedman the three points in his first game in temporary charge, while basement side Preston slumped to seven points off safety at the bottom of the table.

George Burley was responsible for bringing former Tottenham striker Iversen to Selhurst Park before he was sacked following the 3-0 defeat to local rivals Millwall on New Year's Day.

Iversen completed his free transfer from Rosenborg on Sunday and was only allowed to play after being given international clearance prior to the game.

But he wasted little time in making his mark as the 34-year-old got up highest at the back post to nod Cadogan's right-wing cross past Andy Lonergan.

It brought the game to life after a tepid first half in which chances were at a premium.

Neil Danns drilled a shot that was easily saved by Lilywhites goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, while, at the other end, Paul Hayes swivelled and volleyed wide after the ball had been allowed to bounce in the Palace area.

Andy Dorman should have done better when he cut into the box from the left and skied his effort.

Preston thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Keith Treacy was felled following a challenge from Paddy McCarthy, however, the midfielder was given a yellow card for a dive.

Iversen's goal livened the game up and both sides had chances in the final half an hour, but there was no further addition to the scoring.

Preston's caretaker boss David Unsworth has now tasted defeat in both games in charge of North End, who have won just once in 10 games.
