Crystal Palace 1-0 Barnsley
Clinton Morrison
Clinton Morrison scored but missed a penalty
Clinton Morrison scored after just 42 seconds to earn Crystal Palace their first home win of the season and condemn Barnsley to a fourth successive away defeat.

Skipper Neil Ruddock's free-kick from the halfway line dropped straight to Morrison, who was allowed too much space to turn and then go past former Eagles goalkeeper Kevin Miller before placing the ball into the empty goal.

Tommy Black could easily have added a second shortly afterwards but missed from close range, while a header from Leon McKenzie brought a top-class save from the Barnsley keeper, who suffered continuous heckling from the home fans.

Palace supporters have not forgiven Miller after he left Selhurst Park last season while the club were in financial crisis.

Midway through the first half Morrison missed a great chance to double the advantage by shooting high from a mere two yards out, and right on half-time Barnsley were given another let-off.

Matt Appleby handled in front of the referee and from the resulting penalty, Morrison hit a low shot too near the diving Miller who parried to safety.

After the break Barnsley showed more spirit and it was Palace's turn to be pulled deep into their own half.

Substitute Mike Sheron had two good efforts denied and Ian Woan fired wide as the Tykes searched for an equaliser.

But Palace held out to stop the rot of three consecutive defeats and pile more pressure on Barnsley boss Dave Basset.
