QPR   3 - 1   Preston

QPR 3-1 Preston

QPR 3-1 Preston

By Paul Fletcher
At Loftus Road

QPR returned to the top of the table with an easy win over a Preston side increasingly in danger of losing touch at the bottom of the Championship.

Rob Hulse's close-range finish and two stunning Adel Taarabt goals helped QPR take their unbeaten run to 18 games.

North End pulled a goal back late on when Matthew Connolly bundled the ball into his own net.

But Preston, who have the worst defensive record in the division, have now lost 12 of their 18 league games.

Saturday's defeat left the Lancashire club four points from safety and the pressure is on manager Darren Ferguson to quickly bring about a turnaround of form and results.

Rangers' victory was a return to winning form after a sequence of six draws in their previous seven games, during which they had scored just six goals.

Their victory saw them leapfrog a Cardiff side they meet in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table match at Loftus Road next Saturday.

QPR's quest for three points on Saturday received an early boost when Preston goalkeeper Andy Lonergan gifted them a goal after just four minutes.

Under no pressure Lonergan failed to hold a regulation cross from Kyle Walker and Hulse tapped home.

QPR went on to create a succession of openings against a team fielding three new loan signings and that was clearly short of confidence having won just one of their previous eight fixtures.

Leon Clarke missed with a strike across goal, while Jamie Mackie skewed a volley wide and was then denied by David Gray's desperate last-ditch block.

Preston continued to gift their opponents chances and after skipper Wayne Brown was caught in possession, Mackie had a shot saved before Clarke shot wide with the rebound.

North End offered little in attack but they might have snatched an unlikely equaliser on the stroke of half-time when Rangers keeper Paddy Kenny failed to punch clear a cross.

Whereas Lonergan's earlier mistake was instantly punished, Kenny fortunately saw the ball fall to one of his own players, who hacked it to safety.

North End started brightly after the restart and Adam Barton drew a save from Kenny at the end of a crisp move, but their hopes of taking anything from Loftus Road were swiftly extinguished by Taarabt.

The QPR skipper scored a stunning individual goal during last season's 4-0 home win against Preston and Taarabt repeated the dose with a right-foot long-range strike that curled into the top corner.

Jon Parkin cleared a header from Gorkss off the line and Lonergan denied Taaarabt, before the former Spurs midfielder scored his second and his eighth league goal of the season.

It was another thunderous strike from long range but it was not as far from Lonergan as his previous goal and should arguably have been saved.

Connolly then inadvertently deflected a lofted free-kick into his own net late on but it was no more than a consolation for Preston.
