Swansea   1 - 0   Middlesbrough

Swansea 1-0 Middlesbrough

Swansea 1-0 Middlesbrough

Scott Sinclair struck his 12th goal in 16 games to give high-flying Swansea City a deserved victory over Middlesbrough at Liberty Stadium.

It seemed the hosts would have to settle for a draw with Nathan Dyer, Angel Rangel and Joe Allen seeing chances go begging.

But Sinclair broke the deadlock six minutes from time, cutting inside and firing into the bottom corner.

Gary O'Neil had Boro's best chance, but Ashley Williams cleared off the line.

The result sees Swansea stay third in the Championship and keeping up the pressure on Queens Park Rangers and leaders Cardiff.

Boro remain a place above the relegation zone with Tony Mowbray suffering his second defeat since taking over as manager four games ago.

And they always seemed on the back-foot as the Swans started with intent, and were almost in front after just three minutes.

Rangel played in Darren Pratley who cut back from the by-line to Sinclair but his faint touch was not enough to steer the ball home from six yards.

The Swans were looking much sharper than they were in Wednesday's defeat to Bristol City and superbly passed the ball around Middlesbrough's defence.

It was pretty much a backs to the wall job for Mowbray's side in the opening stages and Ashley Williams headed just over from a corner.

Then Dyer linked up brilliantly with Pratley who put in the former Southampton winger to strike at goal, but Jason Steele dived low to deny him.

Openings for Boro were rare with captain O'Neil sending a long-range effort sailing over the bar as they found themselves camped in their own half.

Boro lost midfielder Kevin Thomson to injury, so he was replaced by Nicky Bailey, but it was still Swansea who dominated proceedings.

Craig Beattie almost produced a fine solo effort charging through a number of challenges before being stopped in the box and later he raced on to a ball down the left but Sinclair was beaten to it at the near post.

From the resulting delivery it was Beattie who rose highest to head wide at the far post.

Middlesbrough looked as if they were starting to get a foothold on the game but on 39 minutes were hit on the break from their own free kick deep in Swansea's half.

Sinclair, who has been called up to the England under-21 set-up, ran at ease down the left into the box before cutting back at the by-line for Joe Allen who was denied by the feet of Steele from close range.

The ball ran free and Angel Rangel blasted wide from 12 yards.

Middlesbrough came out for the second half looking to put more pressure on Swansea for possession and it almost had an instant result.

Rodgers hails Allen after Boro win

Beattie was dispossessed on the edge of his own penalty area and the ball eventually found its way to O'Neil who blasted at goal only for Ashley Williams to clear off the line.

The visitors threw on Argentine Julio Arca on the hour to add some steel to their midfield, while David Cotterill replaced Mark Gower for the Swans.

But it was the home side who continued to pressure without creating too many clear-cut chances.

That led to the introduction of Stephen Dobbie up front for Beattie, but captain Garry Monk limped off forcing a defensive reshuffle.

With 11 minutes remaining, Boro keeper Steele was called into action again when a deep Cotterill corner found Rangel to drive through a crowd of players and the England youth international parried well.

But he should have done better to stop the winner six minutes from time when Sinclair cut in from the left and fired into the bottom left-hand corner.
