Middlesbrough   2 - 1   Crystal Palace

Middlesbrough 2-1 Crystal Palace

Middlesbrough 2-1 Crystal Palace

An 85th-minute Patrick McCarthy own goal cost Crystal Palace dear as fellow strugglers Middlesbrough earned their first win under new boss Tony Mowbray.

Boro got off to the worst possible start when Pablo Counago poked Palace in front from Alex Marrow's centre.

But the hosts hit back and drew level through Tarmo Kink's shot across goal.

And McCarthy diverted Tony McMahon's header past his own keeper to reward Boro's endeavour and end a run of four straight defeats for the Teessiders.

Mowbray's side remain in the relegation zone despite the three points, but Boro fans will be as encouraged by their side's display as they will the victory after a bright opening to the match from Palace, themselves on the back of two consecutive losses.

The visitors nearly took the lead after just 12 seconds as James Vaughan found space in the area only to see his header brilliantly saved by Jason Steele, while Darren Ambrose lashed narrowly wide when well placed.

Palace finally got their reward on the half hour when Counago bundled home after a fine, jinking run by Marrow.

Mowbray responded with a couple of substitutions, Nicky Bailey replacing Stephen McManus in the 39th minute and Leroy Lita coming on in place of the ineffective Kris Boyd at half time.

It almost had an immediate effect, Lita heading over from Julio Arca's cross, before Arca himself twice forced fine saves from Palace keeper Julian Speroni.

Mowbray's final substitution did the trick, however, as Kink coming on to score with an excellent angled strike.

And the comeback was complete five minutes before time when McCarthy inadvertently diverted McMahon's header into his own net.
