Cardiff   3 - 2   Bristol City

Cardiff 3-2 Bristol City

Cardiff 3-2 Bristol City

Peter Whittingham celebrated his 200th career start with a brace to seal a gritty comeback victory over Bristol City in a thrilling Severnside derby.

Steven Caulker headed the Robins ahead before Jon Stead's close-range strike doubled the lead inside eight minutes for the Championship's bottom club.

But Jay Bothroyd's low drive gave the hosts hope before two Whittingham free-kicks turned the game on its head.

And Cardiff extended their unbeaten home run to consolidate a top-two spot.

Whittingham, the Championship's top-scorer last season, scored his first goals of the campaign to award Dave Jones a win in his 700th game as a manager.

But Cardiff were made to fight hard to extend their eight-month unbeaten run and crank up the pressure on leaders Queen's Park Rangers.

As on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender Caulker headed the visitors into a fifth minute lead as he flicked in Jamie McAllister's free-kick.

Whittingham hails Cardiff character

Stead drew the foul from Cardiff centre-back Gabor Gyepes and teenager Caulker benefitted from the subsequent set-piece to score his first professional goal.

Stead, within three minutes, then turned goal-scorer in another set piece as the former Premier League forward, who Cardiff failed to sign in the summer, put the Robins two-up.

Cole Skuse's corner was nudged on by Marvin Elliott and Stead converted from inside the six-yard box - scoring his fourth goal in five games against Cardiff - to give the bottom side a shock two-goal lead against the high-flying Bluebirds.

Shell-shocked Cardiff, though, did drag themselves back into the match in a frantic opening 12 minutes as Bothroyd fired in his eighth goal of the season.

Michael Chopra, returning after eight weeks out with an ankle injury, set up strike-partner Bothroyd to smash in the 3,000 goal in Cardiff's 90-year league history.

Jones praises Cardiff potency

Stephen McPhail and Mark Hudson went close as Cardiff turned up the heat on their lowly visitors while Bothroyd brought the best out of David James as the Robins' former England goalkeeper tipped his curling shot wide.

But James was beaten within a minute of the restart as Whittingham's cross-turned-shot eluded keeper and defence to level for Cardiff.

Whittingham swung in a right-wing free-kick after Cole Skuse fouled Stephen McPhail and the ball arrowed straight into the far corner of the net for his first this season.

But James was not to be beaten five minutes later when Chris Burke should have fired Cardiff into the lead.

The Scottish winger cracked Chopra' teasing centre goal-wards but parity remained due to James' stunning point-blank save.

And the veteran stopper confronted his own team-mate Louis Carey, the experienced Bristol City skipper, with an angry verbal exchange for giving Chopra too much room to cross.

Carey, though, was the guilty man, fouling Whittingham, that gave Cardiff the free-kick in which they scored their winner.

Millen admits 'tough' defeat

He bundled over Whittingham before the winger picked himself up to whip a 20-yard free-kick over the wall and into the bottom corner of James' net with 13 minutes remaining.

While Bristol City, still with only one win this season, endure their worst start for 28 years, Cardiff, last season's defeated play-off finalists, will hope the imminent return of knee injury victim Craig Bellamy will provide an added boost for their Premier League push.
