Watford v Swansea

Watford 2-3 Swansea

Scott Sinclair puts Swansea ahead at Vicarage Road with the first goal

Swansea survived a remarkable Watford fight back to record their first away win of the season in the league.

Stephen Dobbie set up Scott Sinclair for the first, then linked superbly with Joe Allen for the second, turning and firing in from the 18-yard box.

Nathan Dyer's burst into the area gave on-loan Frank Nouble a simple tap-in.

But the Swans fell apart as Troy Deeney sparked Watford's recovery and Martin Taylor headed a second, a John Eustace last-minute strike then ruled offside.

Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers was jeered off by the home fans - still annoyed at his acrimonious June 2009 exit from the manager's job at Vicarage Road - but the Northern Irishman will be more than satisfied with his first away points at his new club.

The result ended a run of eight Championship defeats away from the Liberty Stadium since Swansea won on their last visit to Watford in March.

Sinclair's eighth goal of an increasingly impressive season came from Swansea's first meaningful attack of the match as he latched onto Dobbie's chip to fire home in emphatic style in the 11th minute.

The Welsh side continued to dominate proceedings and doubled their lead on the half-hour, with Allen the creator.

He found space on the left and produced an inviting cross for Dobbie to fire high into the net.

Watford, who had won their last three matches, could have pulled one back within a minute, but Adrian Mariappa's header was cleared off the line by Alan Tate.

Marvin Sordell and Danny Graham both went close as the Hornets desperately sought a way back into the game, but the Swans got to the half-time whistle unscathed.

Rodgers hails 'fantastic' result

Substitute Nouble got his first senior goal with his first touch of the match, Dyer breaking free down the right and crossing to set up the easiest of knock-ins.

But momentum turned as Swansea took off Sinclair and Dobbie, Graham missing the chance to reduce the arrears as he shot wide from point-blank range.

Substitute Deeney nodded home Marvin Sordell's cross from close range with 14 minutes remaining to give hope, and five minutes later Taylor firmly headed home Lloyd Doyley's cross.

Watford thought they had completed their task deep into injury time, only to see Eustace's effort ruled offside, the Hornets dropping a place to fourth in the table.

Rodgers did his best to play down the boos of the Vicarage Road crowd at the end.

"The supporters were fine," said the Swansea manager. "The guys will tell you here I had a real close relationship with people - the media, the players, the people - so I understand the frustration.

"It obviously wasn't as bad as it was maybe hyped up to be but that's your job, but I've only got the greatest respect for them and this wasn't any more special for me coming here to win against Watford because I've got a big affinity for this club and always will do."

Watford manager Malky Mackay said: "I think the character we certainly showed in the second half, and latterly in the first half, and the amount of chances we had, I think merited that [disallowed] goal at the end there.

"But there were some great blocks and good saves by the goalkeeper... it wasn't to be."
