Cardiff's Chris Burke tries to get away from Palace's Edgar Davids

Crystal Palace held high-flying Cardiff to a goalless draw to claim their first away points of the season.

Cardiff, missing Craig Bellamy, Michael Chopra and Danny Drinkwater, had the best chance of a drab first half, Julian Speroni denying Chris Burke.

Palace's Julian Bennett and Pablo Counago were kept out by Tom Heaton in a slightly livelier second period that the visitors had the better of.

But the Eagles slip into the relegation zone, while Cardiff stay second.

The home fans had hoped for more after seeing the influential Seyi Olofinjana back in midfield after injury, with Jason Koumas also stepping in to supposedly add more attacking flair.

It looked promising for the Bluebirds after Burke's chance, Palace disrupted by first-half injuries to Claude Davis and Neil Danns.

The Londoners' first clear-cut opening came just before the half-hour mark, Owen Garvan's header forcing a neat save from Heaton.

Heaton was called upon to turn substitute Bennett's effort around a post as Palace made the running at the start of the second half.

The City stopper was soon called upon for a second time, producing a great save to keep out Counago's header in what was the away side's best chance of the game.

Cardiff boss Dave Jones settles for point

Cardiff were struggling more and more to get a grip on proceedings as the encounter wore on, while goal-scoring opportunities were very much at a premium over the remaining 30 minutes.

But it was Crystal Palace who looked most likely to take all three points, and it was they who would have been happier with just the one come full time.

Cardiff manager Dave Jones cut a frustrated figure as his side missed the chance to cut the gap between themselves and leaders QPR, who drew 0-0 against Millwall.

"[Palace] came to counter-attack us and we couldn't get the ball in behind," said Jones.

"It was one-paced and we needed to move the ball quicker. We lost our width too much.

"We have spoken after the game and will speak about it again because we will get more teams who will come here and shut up shop and catch us sleeping at the other end.

"Seeing Seyi Olofinjana and Jason Koumas get 90 minutes under their belts is a bonus to us. It takes time but they will get sharper."
