Swansea   2 - 1   Coventry

Swansea v Coventry

Swansea 2-1 Coventry

Swansea survived a Coventry fight-back to keep their 100% home league record.

Darren Pratley met Mark Gower's corner with a close-range header into an empty net for the Liberty Stadium opener.

Substitute Martin Cranie's blunder then let in Pratley, whose shot struck the post but rebounded to Scott Sinclair for an easy finish from six yards.

Lukas Jutkiewicz had a shot cleared by Garry Monk, the resultant Sammy Clingan corner lashed in by Ben Turner for the Coventry goal, but the Swans held on.

That was the first goal conceded by the Swans at the Liberty this season and continued the Sky Blues' record of having struck in all of their Championship fixtures to date.

But it was not enough to end a dismal record on the road for Coventry, who have not won away from the Ricoh Arena in eight league games since they triumphed at Peterborough in March.

The influential Pratley played a large part in the Sky Blues' downfall, returning to Swansea's midfield having been suspended for Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Leeds, while Joe Allen was handed a start after his impressive cameo at Elland Road.

Iceland international midfielder Aron Gunnarsson came into Coventry's XI as the only change from the 1-1 draw against Leicester.

Aidy Boothroyd's outfit were firmly on the back foot in the first half as midfielder Allen fired just off target shortly before the hosts got the goal their early dominance deserved with 19 minutes on the clock.

Rodgers hails Swans 'bravery'

Gower floated over the corner from the right and Pratley found himself unmarked near the penalty spot to head past Keiren Westwood.

The lively Nathan Dyer could - and maybe should - have quickly made it 2-0 but he spent too long measuring his goal-bound shot from 12 yards and allowed Clingan to get in and produce a saving block.

Coventry offered brief passages of promising play over the remainder of the first half but it was Swansea who remained firmly on top and were getting through the visiting defence with alarming ease, Pratley twice going close to doubling his tally.

Boothroyd looked to switch things around at the break and introduced full-back Cranie into a changed 4-4-2 system, but it was his touch after just 68 seconds that handed Swansea their second.

The former Pompey man played an awful back pass which only found Pratley, his narrow miss teeing up Sinclair for the decisive strike.

Dyer again hesitated somewhat when given the chance to add a third, before Swans skipper Monk cleared off the line from Jutkiewicz at the other end.

The Turner goal from the corner certainly raised visiting spirits and Monk was forced to desperately clear his lines before Jutkiewicz and Gunnarsson both went close.

Westwood produced a stunning save to deny Dyer a killer third late on but, nevertheless, the Swans held on to leave Coventry still waiting for a first win in Swansea since 1950.

"I thought we were outstanding at times and could have scored a few more," said Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers, who revealed after the match that he is hoping to bring a new striker into his squad in the next 48 hours.

"There are moments we can pick out to improve on. But we are learning our lessons which is important."
