Doncaster   3 - 1   Norwich

Doncaster 3-1 Norwich

Doncaster 3-1 Norwich

James Coppinger's superb hat-trick helped Doncaster see off Norwich and climb to fourth in the Championship.

Rovers started brightly and took the lead when Coppinger fired a rising shot into the top corner from 30 yards out.

Coppinger added a second from close range, sweeping home after John Ruddy could only parry George Friend's drive.

Russell Martin reduced the deficit with a diving header from Grant Holt's cross but Coppinger made certain of victory with a deflected 20-yard free-kick.

It was the first time in 75 years that Rovers have beaten the Canaries, and their winning margin would have been greater had it not been for some great stops by Ruddy.

He kept out two stinging long-range efforts by John Oster and Coppinger but could do nothing to deny Coppinger a second time when he fired Doncaster ahead in the 14th minute.

Chris Martin curled a shot wide at the other end soon afterwards but Rovers continued to dominate and only more saves by Ruddy, including another screamer from Coppinger and two predatory efforts from Billy Sharp, kept the score down before half-time.

Coppinger's second goal, five minutes after the restart, gave Doncaster some breathing space - and it was only then that Norwich began to threaten.

Doncaster keeper Neil Sullivan kept out Martin's 25-yard free-kick and also held Andrew Crofts' header from a corner.

After Ruddy denied Martin Woods in spectacular style, Norwich did pull a goal back after 64 minutes when Martin flung himself headlong at Holt's cross to find the bottom corner.

The visitors came forward looking to snatch an unlikely point, and Wes Hoolahan's volley was well held by Sullivan, but Coppinger had the last word with four minutes left.
