Andy Johnson and Stern John celebrate for Forest
Substitute keeper Barry Roche saved an injury-time twice-taken penalty to give Forest a remarkable win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The match had everything, six bookings, plus a red card for Dave Beasant and a mass punch-up followed by a missed penalty in stoppage time as the Eagles recovered to give Forest the fright of their lives.

Forest stormed the Eagles with first-half goals from Andy Johnson, David Platt and an own goal from Hayden Mullins.

Palace recovered after the break with goals from Tommy Black and Fan Zhiyi before Julian Gray had his injury-time penalty saved by Roche.

I like youth and freshness but it finds you out against players like Platt. I think we were unlucky not to get a point
  Alan Smith
Trinidadian and Tobago striker Stern John had already missed a dream chance after five minutes shooting straight at Stuart Taylor from ten yards out.

The writing was on the wall what was to come. Seven minutes later Palace defence was in chaos dealing with a Chris Bart-Williams free kick and Johnson climbed above the Eagles' static defence to plant a header past Taylor.

Stunned

Dave Beasant was sent off in injury time bust up
Forest keeper Beasant was kept busy with two outstanding stops denying Palace's Mikael Forssell but Forest remained composed and stunned the home crowd as they doubled their lead on 31 minutes.

And what a scorcher from player-manager David Platt. A cross from the left was nodded down by John into the path of the ex-England midfielder and from twelve yards out struck a half volley which flew past Taylor.

After a great first half we lost it in the second half we were hoping to defend from the back and hit Palace on the break. But we couldn't even get the ball
  David Platt
The Eagles first half misery was compounded five minutes before the break when Jack Lester was allowed acres of room down the right and his cross dropped to Mullins who succeeded in crashing his clearance past Taylor's outstretched hand.

After the break the Eagles changed their formation to a 4-4-2 and immediately became inspired.

After 51 minutes Palace pulled one back following a terrible clearance from Alan Rogers. The ball fell to Black who struck a low left-foot shot from 20 yards out wide of Beasant.

The Eagles were enjoying their best spell and it was game on seven minutes from time when Fan Zhiyi headed home Wayne Carlisle's in-swinging corner.

On the melee incident none of my players threw a punch although I hear that one punch was thrown by someone
  David Platt
The Chinese international then had a fierce header saved on the line by Beasant before the veteran keeper left his goal and sent the Palace defender flying with a reckless tackle.

All hell broke loose as players squared up and Beasant was given his marching orders for the foul.

It was left to Roche to enter the fray and face the penalty. Gray's first penalty was slotted neatly into the corner.

But the referee ordered it to be retaken because of encroachment and, from the retaken kick, Gray went for the opposite corner, Roche guessed right and Forest got their three points.
