Crystal Palace 1-2 Ipswich

Crystal Palace 1-2 Ipswich

Crystal Palace   1 - 2   Ipswich

Ipswich maintained their unbeaten start to the Championship campaign with a hard-fought victory at Crystal Palace.

Grant Leadbitter gave Town the lead from the penalty spot after a foul on Jonathan Stead by Claude Davis, who was shown a red card as a result.

Five minutes later Carlos Edwards doubled the lead from close range.

Ipswich's Andros Townsend was also sent off for a foul on Palace keeper Julian Speroni before Neil Danns headed a consolation goal for the home side.

It was not an ideal introduction to his new club for former Juventus, Tottenham and Ajax midfielder Edgar Davids, who watched from the stands and was introduced to the Selhurst Park crowd at half time.

And it was also a disappointing way to mark Palace finally coming out of administration on Friday.

But the visitors were the stronger side and made a lively start with Speroni forced to tip a Stead cross on to his own crossbar and Townsend drilling a long-range effort wide.

The first crucial moment of the game came three minutes after the interval when Stead burst into the Palace box only to pulled back by Davis, who was subsequently shown a straight red.

Leadbitter sent Speroni the wrong way with his spot-kick and five minutes later, Ipswich took a firm grasp on the game when his cross was toe-poked home by Edwards.

With 18 minutes remaining, Ipswich were also reduced to 10 men when Townsend's high foot caught Speroni's head and earned the on-loan Tottenham man a straight red.

The Eagles were able to grab a consolation goal in injury time through Danns' header but it came too late to spark a fightback.
