Highlights - Swansea 4-0 Preston

Swansea 4-0 Preston

Swansea   4 - 0   Preston

Swansea City recorded their biggest win in more than two years, earning new boss Brendan Rodgers his first Championship victory of the season.

Stephen Dobbie put them ahead midway through the first half, shooting beyond Andy Longergan from 18 yards.

Darren Pratley doubled the lead from a corner five minutes before the break and Nathan Dyer slid the ball home three minutes later.

David Cotterill completed the rout from the penalty spot.

The last time the Swans recorded such a big win was the 4-0 defeat of Doncaster in January 2008, on their way to the League One title.

Swans near-on perfect - Rodgers

They showed their intent from the start and Preston keeper Lonergan was called into action just five minutes in, saving from Dobbie who launched a shot after cleverly turning on the edge of the box.

Cotterill fired the next real warning when Lonergan had to tip his shot on to the post after being set up by impressive debutant Scott Sinclair.

But the Swans got their deserved lead on 23 minutes when Alan Tate won possession outside the visitors' area and slipped the ball through to Dobbie, controversially loaned to Blackpool last season when Swansea needed a goalscorer, to fire into the bottom corner.

Preston threatened to level almost immediately with former Scunthorpe striker Paul Hayes firing straight at goalkeeper Dorus de Vries, but they offered little else.

And it was the Swans who continued to cause the problems, doing the damage with two goals in the last five minutes of the first half.

606: DEBATE
Doey the Jack

The first came from Nottingham Forest target Pratley, who made the most of dreadful defending to bundle the ball into the net from close range after Preston failed to deal with corner.

Dyer then slid home Dobbie's half-volley across the six-yard box to put the Swans 3-0 up at the break, and they were not finished there.

Moments after the restart, Lonergan had to pull off a good save to deny Sinclair and then an excellent reaction stop from Pratley.

But Swansea grabbed the fourth from the penalty spot on 56 minutes, which Cotterill converted after Dyer had been fouled into the box by Keith Treacy.

Ferguson upbeat despite defeat

Sinclair, who joined last week from Chelsea in a deal that could eventually be worth a club-record £1m, could have got on the scoresheet himself after a brilliant run saw him skip past three players before curling a shot just wide. He later saw an effort ruled out for offside.

Treacy could have made amends for conceding his penalty but hit the post from four yards after Swansea were exposed at the back.

It would not have been enough anyway as Preston suffered their first back-to-back defeats at the start of a season for 21 years. They have not now won on the road in 10 attempts.
