Derby   2 - 0   Cardiff

Derby 2-0 Cardiff

Derby 2-0 Cardiff

Cardiff City suffered their first loss in 11 games to go into the Championship play-offs with a defeat as Derby County ended a stuttering season on a high.

Jay McEveley's fourth goal this season, a simple six-yard header from Kris Commons' cross, put Derby ahead against the under-strength Bluebirds.

Dave Martin extended their lead after the hour as the midfielder fired under keeper Peter Enckelman from 20 yards.

Cardiff's Ross McCormack went close but Derby held on for their first in five.

Both teams fielded shadow sides as Cardiff rested Jay Bothroyd, Michael Chopra and Peter Whittingham - who had scored 55 goals between them this term - while Derby were minus Stephen Bywater, Rob Hulse and Chris Porter.

So Cardiff boss Dave Jones made nine changes ahead of their play-off semi-final first leg at Leicester next Sunday.

And Derby's Kris Commons, making his first appearance for over two months following a hamstring problem, should have put Derby ahead after only 40 seconds but he missed from 10 yards after Nicky Hunt's low right-wing cross.

McCormack then had a curling free-kick pushed over the crossbar by Saul Deeney in a relatively uneventful first-half.

But McEveley broke the stalemate three minutes after the break, powering a close-range header past Enckleman from Kris Commons' inswinging free-kick.

And soon afterwards Commons spurned another opportunity from 10 yards out after reacting quickest the rebound following Enckleman's save to deny Michael Tonge.

Martin doubled Derby's advantage in the 63rd minute when he raced clear down the left side of the area and sent a low shot into the far corner - although Enckleman should have saved the shot.

McCormack always provided the biggest threat for Cardiff and the Scotland international forced a superb save from Deeney late on.

His 25-yard shot clipped the top of the crossbar via the fingertips of the Rams keeper with three minutes remaining.

Derby County manager Nigel Clough said:

"It was a lovely way to end the season.

"Although there was nothing at stake, we played some decent football, scored a couple of good goals, got some youngsters on the pitch and finished with a win.

"It's an improvement on last season. We have a higher league position and more points, so it represents a little bit of progress.

"We have also managed to get a little more off the wage bill at the club and the average age of the squad is coming down as well, so there are small grounds for optimism.

"But we feel we are a better side than 14th and we will be looking to get in the top half of the table next season."

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones:

Jones explains under-strength Cardiff

"We had 10 players out injured in the stands, but I thought we did okay for an hour.

"This was a nothing game really, it was just a matter of not picking up any more injuries. Thankfully we have managed to do that.

"One or two players had a run out and that was important, but there is momentum with the football club and this result doesn't mean a thing.

"There is a confidence about the football club, but there is not an over confidence. We know what we have to do and we will be working hard to try to do it.

"In the play-offs it all comes down to if you deserve it."
