Preston   0 - 1   Leicester

Preston 0-1 Leicester

Preston 0-1 Leicester

Andy King smashed home a superb second-half winner to secure Leicester's place in the Championship play-offs.

King collected possession on the halfway line and ran on to power home a superb 63rd-minute winner.

Lloyd Dyer, Jack Hobbs and James Vaughan all went close for the Foxes before the break.

And although Preston improved after the interval, the visitors continued to create the better chances and were good value for their victory.

Dyer had the first chance of the match, winning the ball and hitting a fierce shot which drew a fine block from defender Elliott Ward.

Preston responded immediately and on-loan midfielder Matt James fired a 20-yard shot over the crossbar.

But Nigel Pearson's Leicester side looked the more likely, with their best chance of the first period falling to on-loan striker Vaughan, but he somehow managed to mishit a weak shot wide of the target from six yards out.

Injuries to Foxes defender Michael Morrison and Preston goalkeeper Andy Lonergan seemed to affect both sides during the middle period of the game but the openings continued to come.

Two minutes after the restart visiting striker Paul Gallagher crossed dangerously for Martyn Waghorn, whose close-range right-foot shot flew over the crossbar.

At the other end, Chris Weale did well to punch a deep cross from Billy Jones away from danger in the 54th minute.

King then went close with a superb dipping volley.

But moments later he hit the all-important winner, striding forward at pace and then crashing the ball in, despite being bundled to the ground at one point.

North End exerted plenty of pressure late on but they rarely threatened the Leicester goal and the best opportunity came at the other end where Waghorn lobbed narrowly over the bar from 12 yards out.

Preston manager Darren Ferguson:
"It's disappointing to lose, but it's hard when there's not a lot to play for this season.

"We gave it a really good go, but it was a disappointing goal to concede.

"We knew it was going to be tough because they could make sure of their play-off place, but I thought we had a couple of decent chances."

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson:

"I can't praise the players enough, they deserved this for all their hard work this season.

"It was always going to be a really tough game against Preston, but I thought we coped with them well and could have probably scored more goals.

"I want the players to keep working to make sure we finish strongly."
