Sheff Wed   1 - 1   Sheff Utd

By Sam Lyon

Sheff Wed v Sheff Utd

Sheff Wed 1-1 Sheff Utd

Sheffield Wednesday remain in the drop zone of the Championship after being denied a precious win by rivals United in a frantic derby at Hillsborough.

The Blades started the better and Eddie Nolan was lucky early on when his attempted clearance hit his own post.

Then, against the run of play, Darren Potter volleyed home the Owls' opener.

That would have been enough to lift them out of the bottom three, but Lee Williamson's free-kick salvaged a draw to leave Wednesday a point from safety.

And the Owls now have only two matches left to try to ensure their survival.

They are a point behind Crystal Palace having played the same amount of games, while Watford are two points clear in 20th with a game in hand on their rivals.

It could have been different for the hosts had Jermaine Johnson made the most of two good efforts late in the game, but as it was the majority of the 35,485 crowd were left disappointed with a draw.

Nolan's near-miss aside, the game had produced few clear chances in the opening half-hour until Richard Cresswell was sent clear by Darius Henderson's pass only to shoot wide for the visitors.

Then came the game's most controversial moment, Johnson appearing to catch Cresswell with an elbow that forced the Blades striker off the field for seven minutes to receive stitches, but referee Chris Foy ruling the incident accidental.

606: DEBATE

And the visitors' frustration was then compounded when Potter arrived to guide Luke Varney's clipped cross into the corner on the volley.

Wednesday improved thereafter, but could do little to prevent United levelling, Williamson fortunate to see his free-kick from near the left byline drift over everyone's head and into the net off the far post.

Still, though, the hosts could have won it. However, first Johnson's thumping drive was beaten clear by Grant before another effort from the Jamaica international in the dying moments flew high and wide.

It means Wednesday have it all to do if they are retain their Championship status, while United move up into 10th in the table.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine:

"If we can be a bit more clinical up front and just stop getting some awful goals against us in terms of luck, then we've got a chance.

"It's still to a large extent in our own hands.

"If we can match or better Crystal Palace's result next week then it goes to the last game."

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell:

"Seven or eight of those lads are out of contract in two weeks' time and they showed the desire and the passion to want to play here.

"This is a terrific atmosphere. It's a great derby game and arguably should be played in the Premier League.

"It's important that both clubs get themselves sorted out and get back there as quickly as possible."
