Swansea   3 - 1   Barnsley

Swansea 3-1 Barnsley

Swansea 3-1 Barnsley

Swansea held on to their play-off spot with a comfortable win over Barnsley.

Luke Steele parried a Darren Pratley header into Ashley Williams for the opener, then Shefki Kuqi glanced in a diving header off Mark Gower's cross.

Darren Moore's header from a corner gave Barnsley hope after slack Swansea defending, but Pratley secured the win following a fine Andrea Orlandi set-up.

Seventh-placed Blackpool's 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest means Swansea's lead over them remains a slim two points.

The Swans, who have been in the play-off positions since December, have not looked so assured in recent weeks with their latest defeat at Bristol City leaving them with only one win in their last eight games.

Manager Paulo Sousa shrugged off criticism of his repeated tinkering with the team to make six changes, Federico Bessone, Albert Serran, Kuqi, Cedric van der Gun, Leon Britton and Gower all recalled.

With just four minutes on the clock, Kuqi produced perhaps the miss of the season.

Tykes keeper Steele completely missed a kick over the top, leaving the popular Finn with an open goal from four yards out, the striker somehow managing to blaze his lazy left-footed effort wide.

Pratley happy with play-off form

The home side eased the anguish of the dumbfounded Liberty Stadium crowd on 23 minutes as Van der Gun directed goal-ward a header from a David Cotterill corner.

Steele did well to save down low, but could only divert the ball into the path of Williams who nodded in his fifth goal of the season.

Kuqi then made amends with his fifth goal of the season, throwing himself at Gower's cross and scuffing his header past a despairing Steele.

The Finn showed his relief with his trademark celebration dive that more than matched his lunge for the goal.

Unusually sloppy Swansea defence let Barnsley back into the game.

Goalkeeper Dorus de Vries - who Sousa had touted this week for a Netherlands World Cup call-up - came a long way for an Iain Hume corner.

The Dutchman failed to get near the inswinging ball, though, allowing Moore a free header at the far post.

The Yorkshiremen should have been level at the break, the hesitant Swansea defence allowing Hugo Colace through for a one-on-one with the keeper.

He could only shoot straight at de Vries from short range, then Hume proceeded to waste a fine chance right at the start of the second period.

Swansea's top-scorer Pratley eventually settled nerves in the 72nd minute with his seventh of the season.

The midfielder profited from a superb run and cut-back by Orlandi, whom Sousa had just introduced from the bench, delivering an emphatic finish into the top corner from 12 yards.

Barnsley, whose season is petering out, can now boast just one win from their last 11 games.

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa:

Sousa hails 3-1 Barnsley win

"We needed that result and wanted it badly but we have trained hard and are getting stronger every game.

"I am very happy with the performance and everyone showed responsibility on the pitch.

"I never felt it necessary to shut up shop once we had a two-goal lead as I am not like that.

"Nothing has changed in the race for the play-offs but I feel very comfortable with my side.

"We need to focus on our own high levels and if we have to win our last two games then so be it.

"I have only seen misses like Kuqi's on videos but I am very glad he scored a goal to make up for it."

Barnsley manager Mark Robins:
"I enjoyed watching Swansea because they had the ball most of the time.

"There is no doubt about it, just to survive in this division is not enough for me or for the club and the players have not given value for money over these last few games.

"I am relieved we have points in the bag because we haven't performed lately, in fact we have been garbage.

"The high point of the season was when we reached ninth position but the players only seemed comfortable battling away in the lower reaches and this mentality must change.

"Everyone has to push themselves that much harder over the final two games of the season as I want to see some desire from the players."
