QPR   0 - 1   Cardiff

QPR 0-1 Cardiff City

QPR 0-1 Cardiff City

Joe Ledley sent Cardiff City into the play-offs with the vital goal 10 minutes from the end at Loftus Road.

QPR's defeat leaves Neil Warnock's side still contemplating the mathematical possibility of relegation.

However, Bluebirds boss Dave Jones had Ledley to thank for ensuring their Premier League dream has come closer with two games remaining.

Mark Kennedy cut the ball back inside the box and Cardiff-bred Ledley enhanced his local hero status.

Ledley has been at the centre of transfer speculation since last season and has undergone double hip surgery.

But he chose the perfect time to score his third goal of the campaign.

Rangers sat fourth in October with ambitions of being in competition with the likes of Cardiff at this stage of the season, but theirs has been a roller-coaster ride.

The contest was littered with chances for both sides, but no-one could find the back of the net until Ledley ended the stalemate.

QPR's Tamas Priskin curled an early chance over the bar and at the other end Jay Bothroyd saw goalkeeper Radek Cerny hold his low cross.

Adel Taarabt beat visiting keeper David Marshall, but saw his shot hit the post from 25 yards and Cardiff were relieved to see the ball ricochet for a goal-kick.

Peter Ramage denied Ross McCormack before Peter Whittingham sliced Bothroyd's downward header wide.

After the break Taarabt and Priskin then combined for the hosts best chance of the opening period, but Priskin again failed to hit the target.

Anthony Gerrard was equally wasteful for Cardiff as he failed to hit home from a yard out.

Bothroyd and Hogan Ephraim sent shots over the bar and Taarabt was then at the centre of controversy.

Taarabt, on loan from Spurs, argued with home fans, then stood in the centre circle asking boss Warnock to replace hm.

Warnock refused to and after Ledley's winner he came closest to levelling with a shot Marshall crucially saved.

QPR manager Neil Warnock:
"I told Cardiff to make sure they go up because next season we will be a different ball game.

"We need to get though this season and then look to enjoy ourselves next year.

"You need goals to win games and we don't look like scoring goals. It's frustrating."

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones:

Jones warns of mounting pressure

"The pressure now begins because we've got there, we wanted to do it our way, we didn't want to rely on anybody else so it meant to come here and we set up to get the win.

"It was difficult. David [Marshall]'s not had a great deal to do. They're a dangerous side - there were lots of shots from distance, but we defended it well again and we got the break.

"It was a cutting edge goal, really, because we broke on them so quick I think we caught them cold and it was a good finish again by Joe."
