Newcastle   4 - 1   Blackpool

Newcastle v Blackpool

Newcastle 4-1 Blackpool

Newcastle moved a step closer towards winning the Championship title but dented Blackpool's play-off hopes.

Jonas Gutierrez opened the scoring with a strike that deflected off Ian Evatt before Andy Carroll headed home a free-kick from Danny Guthrie.

Peter Lovenkrands hit the post before Kevin Nolan collected a pass from Gutierrez and stroked home the third.

Wayne Routledge completed the Magpies scoring with a low strike before Brett Ormerod smashed home a consolation.

The result means that victory over Reading on Tuesday would leave Chris Hughton's team needing just one point from their final three games to win the title.

It was a thoroughly deserved victory - and might have been by a greater margin but for a series of excellent saves from Matt Gilks.

The Blackpool keeper saved a long-range strike from Gutierrez and a free-kick from Ryan Taylor shortly after the restart.

Gilks then had to make a double save from Gutierrez and Lovenkrands, and later made an incredible stop to prevent the Danish striker scoring with a header.

Lovenkrands should have scored late on but shot over the crossbar.

Blackpool did enjoy spells of possession and it might have been a different contest if DJ Campbell had made the most of a decent opening after collecting a through ball from Charlie Adam after 18 minutes but he shot tamely at Steve Harper.

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton:

"The best time to do anything is the first opportunity.

"We are aware that a win on Tuesday night makes it almost there, but what I'd like to see is this group of lads go right through to the end of the season.

"Irrespective of what happens on Tuesday, I am quite sure I won't see a group of lads looking to tail off towards the end of the season."

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway on whether his team were scared:

"Our boys in Afghanistan have got real fears, haven't they?

"These boys haven't. They are lucky to be playing here and doing things like that. We caught a very good team in a very good moment.

"I didn't recognise us as the team we have looked all season and unfortunately, we were well beaten."
