Crystal Palace   0 - 2   QPR

Crystal Palace v QPR

Crystal Palace 0-2 QPR

QPR manager Neil Warnock masterminded a crucial victory in the relegation showdown against his former club Crystal Palace.

Akos Buzsaky drilled in a spectacular 11th-minute opener from the edge of the area to put QPR in the driving seat.

The visitors confirmed their dominance just after the break when Kaspars Gorkss headed in Adel Taarabt's corner.

Clint Hill went close for Palace, but Paul Hart's men were otherwise outclassed by their London rivals.

Warnock's return to Palace, whom he left in March against a backdrop of administration and a subsequent 10-point deduction that thrust the club into relegation trouble, had inevitably dominated the build-up to the game.

And if a home crowd that greeted Warnock warmly had any doubts about what they were missing, they were emphatically dispelled by a victory that leaves Palace just a point and a place above the relegation zone.

The win breaks a seven-game winless streak for QPR, who bore little resemblance to the side beaten 4-0 at Leicester on Easter Monday despite being forced into an early defensive reshuffle.

With the game only seconds old, a clash of heads between Palace front man Calvin Andrew and Rangers defender Damion Stewart left both men prone.

Andrew rose groggily to his feet, but Stewart lay inert for interminable minutes before being helped to the sidelines.

If the Rangers man was suffering from double vision, for the next few minutes so too were the visiting support, who hardly knew whether to watch the game or the flurry of touchline activity surrounding Stewart.

The solution to their dilemma was provided by Buszaky, who rifled in a superb shot from just outside the area after Palace had failed to clear a Hogan Ephraim cross.

It was just reward for an enterprising start by Rangers, who absorbed the inevitable withdrawal of Stewart with minimal fuss, Peter Ramage moving into the centre and Mikele Leigertwood shifting to right-back.

Andrew likewise departed the fray soon afterwards, nursing a sizeable lump on his head.

Yet the bigger headache for Palace was how to break down a Rangers defence that, evidently stung by events at the Walkers Stadium, showed impressive cohesion and obduracy despite Stewart's absence.

Clint Hill came closest to providing an answer, forcing a fine save from Radek Cerny after being played in by Darren Ambrose, while Neil Danns had a header cleared over the bar as Palace finished the first half strongly.

Danns again went close shortly after the break, but the initiative remained with Rangers and soon their dominance was rewarded with another goal.

Taarabt swung in a corner and Gorkss, lurking just beyond the six-yard box, rose unopposed to plant a firm header across the flailing Julian Speroni and into the bottom corner.

Palace, who had protested about the award of the corner - Speroni having cleared from just behind the byline - were clearly aggrieved.

But on an afternoon when Warnock's new side were palpably superior to his old, they could have little real cause for complaint.

Crystal Palace manager Paul Hart:
"Maybe the start, with that horrendous clash of heads, did us more harm than it did Rangers.

"That was probably our worst performance since I got here. QPR played very well but it was a really off-day for us.

"It was a massive opportunity and we were poor."

QPR manager Neil Warnock:
"We got the points but I haven't really enjoyed anything about today.

"I was amazed with the reception I got - I expected a lot more boos, so I was quite emotional.

"I worked my socks off while I was here, so that meant a lot.

"The neurosurgeon is on his way and they are worried about Damion Stewart [a scan on whom revealed a slight crack in the skull].

"It was a savage collision."
