Cardiff City earned what could yet prove to be a crucial point at home to Reading to maintain their push to secure a Championship play-off place.

With three games remaining, fourth-placed Cardiff have a seven-point advantage over Blackpool in seventh.

Reading need wins to keep alive their slim hopes and nearly took three points when Simon Church came off the bench to hit the woodwork with a header.

Kelvin Etuhu went closest for Cardiff with a low drive turned round the post.

Reading weathered some early Cardiff pressure and both sides cancelled each other out in the middle of the park, leading to a significant lack of goalmouth action.

Peter Whittingham put a half-chance wide after 26 minutes, connecting with Jay Bothroyd's low cross at the near post after he had been sent clear down the right by Michael Chopra.

But the chances of a breakthrough started to diminish as the half wore on, with the game becoming somewhat scrappy.

A low key half did end in excitement though, as Royals goalkeeper Adam Federici saved well from Etuhu's low drive after a strong run.

Chopra was replaced by Ross McCormack at the break but it was Reading who threatened first, captain Brian Howard firing narrowly over the angle of post and bar.

The pace of the second half slowly picked up, with Reading posing the bigger threat as Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jimmy Kebe had goal-bound shots blocked by Bluebirds keeper David Marshall.

As the game opened up, Bothroyd forced Federici to tip his effort around a post, before substitute Church came closest to breaking the deadlock for the visitors.

The lively Sigurdsson whipped a corner into the area and Reading's Welsh international Church saw his close-range header bounce off the frame of both crossbar and post.

But Cardiff survived to extend their unbeaten run to eight games, while Reading have now lost just two of their last 15 league games.

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones:
"We don't set out to be boring but if I have got to do it I will and on another day we may have scored.

Hard-won point pleases boss Jones

"Our strength is attacking teams and scoring goals and there is still a lot of points up for grabs.

"We played our rivals lately and they have not been easy games and we haven't enough players at the club to give them a rest.

"It was two in-form sides slugging it out and we knew it was going to be a tough battle but it's another point and edges us closer to where we've never been before."

Reading manager Brian McDermott:
"I thought we might nick it at the end when we switched formation to play two up front trying to do just that.

"If you consider where we were in January then the players deserved all the plaudits as it has been a fantastic effort.

"Fair play to Cardiff, they have done very well over 40 matches and I loved my time here as a player.

"My job was to make sure we stayed in this division, we have done that and now we can go on from here."
