Watford   1 - 1   West Brom

Watford 1-1 West Brom

Watford 1-1 West Brom

Chris Brunt scored a dramatic equaliser five minutes into injury time to rescue West Brom and break Watford hearts.

The relegation-threatened hosts looked set to claim a vital win after Danny Graham's superb long-range strike with only five minutes left to play.

But Brunt latched onto Andwele Slory's header to convert in the last minute of added time to keep Roberto Di Matteo's side on track for automatic promotion.

Jon Harley had earlier been sent off for the Hornets for two yellow cards.

The visitors started the game knowing victory, coupled with anything but a win for third-placed Nottingham Forest would result in their second promotion in three seasons.

Di Matteo focussed on promotion push

However, regardless of the injury-time drama at Vicarage Road, a place in the Premier League this season still seems inevitable with such a sizeable gap stretching back to third.

The draw does mean leaders Newcastle have stolen a march in the race to be crowned as Championship champions although West Brom fans will be delighted with a point after such a shabby performance by their standards.

Watford boss Malky Mackay must have thought his lowly side were on course for a crucial and deserved three points but now must turn his attentions to a crunch clash with fellow strugglers Plymouth next weekend.

The men from Vicarage Road played at a far higher level than their league position suggested, although their hopes of beating the drop to League One were not helped by a serious-looking injury to influential England Under-21 international Tom Cleverley late on.

The Hornets are still in real danger near the bottom of the table but the contrasting fortunes of the two sides were barely evident, particularly in the first half.

Adrian Mariappa could have put the hosts ahead but fired straight at Baggies stopper Scott Carson when put through while Graham saw Gianni Zuiverloon pull off a fine block at the back post.

Don Cowie also blazed into the stands as the hosts made light of their abject recent form.

West Brom, in contrast, looked slugged and were a far cry from the side that passed the ball well at home against Leicester only a few days ago.

A last-ditch clearance from Jay DeMerit did deny Graham Dorrans from heading home but that was as close as Albion came in the first period.

Indeed, those without prior knowledge would never have guessed Di Matteo's side were on the brink of Premier League football as they trudged off disconsolately.

Things hardly improved after the break either as an injury to Zuiverloon forced Abdoulaye Meite into action off the bench - although that at least provided watching Ivory Coast boss Sven Goran Eriksson with someone to watch.

Watford had already seen Lloyd Doyley and Will Buckley limp off, and they suffered a further setback when proceedings were halted while Cleverley received lengthy treatment.

Mackay disappointed for Watford players

The 20-year-old midfielder, who is on loan from Manchester United, was caught on the ankle by Jonas Olsson and looked in severe pain before being taken from the field on a stretcher with an oxygen mask in place.

Things got even worse for the hosts moments later when Harley was shown a second yellow card. The former Chelsea defender was booked in the first half for a foul on Robert Koren and received his marching orders after a late challenge on James Morrison.

In truth, the first 85 minutes lacked chances and the game appeared to be drifting towards a goalless draw.

But that was about to change as, out of nowhere, a long ball was nodded by Cowie into the path of Graham who crashed a brilliant right-footed volley past the outstretched hand of Carson.

West Brom were stunned and further demoralised moments later when substitute Morrison somehow headed wide from two yards out.

It seemed not to be the Baggies' day but Brunt refused to throw in the towel and popped up at the back post to head home Slory's looping header as the clock ticked towards 96 minutes.
