Swansea   3 - 0   Scunthorpe

Swansea 3-0 Scunthorpe

Swansea 3-0 Scunthorpe

Swansea got their stuttering play-off bid back on track with a convincing win over relegation-haunted Scunthorpe.

David Edgar started the rout with his first goal for the club, from close range after a well-worked short corner.

Guillem Bauza's effort from another corner was cleared off the line, but Ashley Williams scored a follow-up.

Shefki Kuqi rounded off the scoring with an emphatic blast past Joe Murphy after being left one-on-one with the keeper by the blundering Iron defence.

To add to the home team's joy after their biggest league win of the season, goalkeeper Dorus de Vries' 23rd clean sheet of the season broke the club record previously established by Roger Freestone.

Swansea, who have the weakest attack in the Championship, were facing the team with the worst defence, a much-needed tonic for the home side who had gone six games without a win and were coming off the back of Saturday's last-gasp derby defeat at play-off rivals Cardiff.

Paulo Sousa made six changes and his men started brightly with Nathan Dyer - playing the 100th club game of his career - freeing Mark Gower down the right.

The winger sent in a delightful cross, Kuqi meeting it with a looping touch that rebounded off the bar.

Man-of-the-match Angel Rangel then freed Kuqi with a neat through ball, but the Finn lacked composure with a weak shot that failed to quench the thirst of the home fans, who had sat through the three previous Liberty Stadium games without a goal from their team.

That drought was ended by on-loan Burnley defender Edgar, who struck his first goal in over a year on his third appearance for the club.

David Cotterill took a well-worked short corner to the near post, Kuqi flicking on for Edgar to lift the ball into the top of the net.

Bauza went close to doubling the lead after good work from Cotterill, but the Iron held on in a first half entirely dominated by the home side.

The onslaught continued after the break, a golden chance falling to Bauza from a Cotterill corner.

The Spaniard hit a terrible shot that was going wide, but it rebounded in a crowded penalty area and was cleared off the line by Niall Canavan.

De Vries breaks Freestone record

The ball fell straight to Williams, though, who made no mistake from close range.

The pressure continued, Dyer having a fine effort well saved by Republic of Ireland international Murphy.

The Scunthorpe keeper was then exposed one-on-one with Kuqi after a looped ball over the top.

The Swansea striker again lacked composure in front of goal and shot straight at the keeper, Dyer having a follow-up shot blocked by the defence.

A blunder from the hapless Iron defence gave burly front man Kuqi another chance, though, a flighted ball from Garry Monk being flicked goalwards by Canavan.

Kuqi latched onto it and rampaged forward before blasting a low shot past Murphy for the third goal.

Josh Wright came closest to spoiling de Vries' record bid, a late free kick from the Scunthorpe midfielder hitting the Swansea crossbar.

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa:
"That was the best way to get things back in focus but I am also very happy with the intensity shown by all the players.

Sousa joy at win over Scunthorpe

"Although I made a number of changes I'm always confident in the strength of the squad and with fresh minds and legs I know we can do it.

"It is difficult to keep a high standard throughout a season so that is why the squad is so important.

"With all respect to our opponents we will concentrate only on ourselves and will try and win every game which we are certainly capable of doing.

"Some games we play direct football and in others we play the ball around but it all depends on our opponents.

"We need to keep creating goal-scoring opportunities and it is a pleasure to work with the players at this club."

Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins:
"We are very disappointed to concede at set plays after coming with a plan to nullify Swansea and their counter-attacks.

"But the Swans could take many sides to the cleaners with their style of play.

"The big thing to realise is that Swansea are a great passing side on a superb pitch but they scored two goals as a result of corner kicks.

"We know 47 points is not enough but we have more home games than away and if we keep our home form going then I'm sure we will get enough points for safety.

"But if you keep giving the ball away as we did then you must expect to be punished."
