Newcastle   2 - 1   Sheff Utd

Newcastle 2-1 Sheffield United

Newcastle 2-1 Sheffield United

By Mark Ashenden

Kevin Nolan's volley capped a stunning night for newly promoted Newcastle as they battled past Sheffield United.

Nottingham Forest's draw secured their top-flight return before kick-off but the party mood was quashed when Richard Cresswell nodded in an early opener.

The scores were level before the break when Chris Morgan grappled with Andy Carroll in the box and upstepped Peter Lovenkrands to slot home from the spot.

The stage was set as Danny Simpson set up Nolan to smash in a worthy winner.

It was a goal that deserved to win any match and although it capped off a sporadic team performance, the supporters in black and white on a glorious night for Newcastle will care little and will now start to cast their minds to harder battles in the Premier League.

After Nottingham Forest could only draw 0-0 with Cardiff earlier on Monday, the celebrations were able to start before kick-off.

Just 10 months after the Magpies' 16-year stay in the top flight ended with a timid defeat at Aston Villa, manager Chris Hughton walked his jubilant players out to a rapturous reception.

But Hughton, who recalled Wayne Routledge, Lovenkrands, Gutierrez and Danny Guthrie, was in no mood to party too early and declared his team still "had a job to do" by targeting the Championship title.

They began lively enough against opponents still with slim hopes of making the play-off spots and Routledge blazed wastefully wide and over after a cute through-ball from Nolan.

Despite their bright start, the Newcastle faithful were stunned into silence on 22 minutes when their players conceded only their 10th goal at home this season.

Harper's curling corner left the defence like statues and Cresswell took full advantage to jump brilliantly and nod in past the helpless keeper Steve Harper for his ninth league goal of the season.

Newcastle were never short of nervy moments at the back, but their attackers continued to drive forward in waves as Guthrie and Routledge missed great opportunities.

One minute before the interval, the party atmosphere returned and it was thanks to the efforts of Carroll who had only just narrowly headed wide of the post.

The striker, rarely out of the headlines for actions on and off the pitch this season, and defender Morgan had already been spoken to for tussling in the box and after Guthrie's corner was curled in there was something inevitable about the United defender being penalised for grabbing hold of Carroll.

The United players were incensed, but Denmark's Lovenkrands kept his cool to side-foot the ball past the diving Steve Simonsen as the Blades coach Gary Speed was sent to the stands for protesting.

After the tempestuous finish to the opening half, the second period began with few moments of inspiration until the exemplary Jose Enrique passed through to Lovenkrands for a golden opportunity to take the lead.

The striker for once seemed to flap at the ball and blasted horrendously over the target.

Guitierrez had the crowd on their feet on 70 minutes when he picked up a long Harper throw on the halfway line before carving open the defence and firing straight at the keeper.

Newcastle didn't have to wait too long for more celebrations though when Simpson hooked the ball back into the box to find Nolan, making his 400th career appearance, who fired in with a spectacular scissor-kick.

For the second time in three days they had recovered from going a goal down - they beat Peterborough 3-2 on Saturday - and it was a strike that finally brought a smile to their manager on the sidelines.

After picking up their eighth consecutive home win Newcastle will look to power on and pip West Brom to the title, while Kevin Blackwell's hard-working side will probably have to wait another season before dreaming of a return to the top flight.

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell on the penalty decision:

"If they are going to give a penalty for that, then they had better start giving about 400 and you had better start practising your penalties.

"We were disappointed. It was harsh to say the least.

"But I was delighted with the players. I told them to go out and shown how good they could be, and they showed the heart and spirit that is associated with Sheffield United. Eight of these players won't be here in four weeks time, but they put their bodies on the line for the club."
