Scunthorpe   2 - 4   Blackpool

Scunthorpe v Blackpool

Scunthorpe 2-4 Blackpool

Blackpool closed to within a point of the final Championship play-off place after a vital win at Glanford Park.

They went ahead in strange fashion as Andrew Wright diverted into his own net but Grant McCann equalised from the spot after he was fouled by Ian Evatt.

Blackpool continued to press and loanee Seamus Coleman weaved through before flicking in, and substitute DJ Campbell ghosted in to head the third.

Campbell tapped in a fourth and a late Gary Hooper goal was mere consolation.

Scunthorpe remain in danger towards the foot of the table, still only five points above third-bottom Crystal Palace.

They had plenty of possession in the first half but created little in terms of clear-cut chances and it was Blackpool who looked the more purposeful going forward.

Stephen Dobbie curled an effort from the edge of the area that was smartly tipped away by Joe Murphy but the visitors were rewarded for their attacking endeavours as they took the lead midway through the opening half.

The floated cross from the right by Coleman eluded striker Ben Burgess but was inadvertently met by the on-rushing Wright who, much to his dismay, produced a perfect finish into the corner that even Murphy could not keep out.

Dobbie tried his luck from distance when he saw Murphy off his line but the ball drifted wide in the swirling breeze.

After the interval Scunthorpe were much improved but there was a suggestion of handball from McCann as he burst into the box.

He calmly slotted in the penalty but Coleman soon put Blackpool ahead again with his mazy run and neat finish from eight yards.

Campbell headed in at the far post after being picked out by Hameur Bouazza, and tapped in his second two minutes later after the influential Charlie Adam's shot was saved by Murphy.

A minute later substitute Hooper marked his returned from injury by prodding home Garry Thompson's drilled cross from two yards out, but it was the Blackpool fans who were singing in the rain.

Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins:

"With 77 minutes gone a horrendous bit of defending by ourselves gives them a goal. Then obviously at 2-1 we've got to try and get a goal and by doing that we've exposed ourselves far too much in the middle of the park and been far too open.

"The last 13 minutes of the game it's gone beyond us. It would have been a good point.

"It's going to go to the Forest game, we've said that. We've had an opportunity at home, we've been very good at home this season, to get something from it.

"But Blackpool are an excellent side, they thumped Swansea last week by 5-1 they play really good exciting football and have a player in Charlie Adam who is going to be courted by a lot of teams in the Premiership, he's an outstanding player."

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway:

"Are we good enough to reach Wembley? Can I grow a wig and dance in high heels? Of course we can, we'll have to keep this level of performance up and then we'll have to see if it's good enough.

"But if somebody had given me this position at the start of the season I would have bitten their arm off.

"It was a fantastic game of football, both sides were nervy as there was so much at stake. I had some exciting options on the bench and the substitutions I was able to make made all the difference.

"I was concerned when they equalised as it gave them the momentum, but we snatched it back off them and then we used the space that they left us well."
