Crystal Palace gave their survival hopes a boost with a win at Watford, who are now hovering a point above Palace in the drop zone.
Stern John headed Palace in front against the run of play on 30 minutes.
Sean Scannell scored from the rebound after his header came back off the post to make it 2-0 before Neil Danns slammed in a loose ball.
Watford managed a consolation through Danny Graham before Lee Hills was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Hills had escaped with a booking in the first half after hauling down Henri Lansbury, one of several decisions which infuriated the hosts, who also hit the woodwork three times.
Referee Paul Taylor turned down the Hornets' early plea for a penalty after Will Buckley's cross struck Paddy McCarthy's arm.
The inspired Julian Speroni made a superb save from Martin Taylor's point-blank header before Tom Cleverley's drive crashed off the crossbar.
But it was Palace who took the lead, John heading in his first goal for the Eagles eight months after arriving at the club from Johnny Ertl's cross.
Lansbury was next to find the woodwork, heading against the post, and just after half-time, Palace doubled their lead when Scannell also found the post only for the rebound to fall kindly for him.
Danns wrapped up the win with 25 minutes remaining after Scott Loach parried Scannell's shot into the air, but there was still time for Cleverley to curl a shot onto the post before substitute Graham finally found the net.
Watford boss Malky Mackay said: "We had enough chances to win two games, but you have to be clinical, take your chances at one end and defend at the other.
"We had total domination of the first half, but went to sleep once. When you're not clinical, and don't punish teams when you're on top, you're going to have problems.
"I don't want this club to fail. We have to make sure we fight and scrap for every last point."
Crystal Palace boss Paul Hart: "I think we had to win this game, if we hadn't it would have looked pretty bad.
"But there are six games to go and it will be about who can hold their nerve at times.
"There will be a lot of twists yet but this has put it there for us."
