Nottm Forest   2 - 0   Crystal Palace

Nott'm Forest v Crystal Palace

Nottm Forest 2-0 Crystal Palace

Nottingham Forest equalled a club record of 12 straight home wins with an easy win over 10-man Crystal Palace.

The hosts dominated from the start and took the lead when Wes Morgan hit a spectacular effort into the top corner.

Darren Ambrose went close with a free-kick for the Eagles but after Matt Lawrence saw red for a deliberate handball their challenge disintegrated.

Nathan Tyson fired in from close range on the break late on to seal a win that leaves Palace rooted in the drop zone.

The only previous time Forest won 12 league games in a row - back in 1980 - Brian Clough's side had just finished runners-up in the top flight and won the European Cup.

This time around the aspirations are slightly more modest, but no less daunting, as Billy Davies attempts to steer the club back into the Premier League after an 11-year absence.

The record-equalling victory rarely looked in doubt as Forest took control from the first whistle, with Palace keeper Julian Speroni needing to be at his best to keep his side in the game.

In the opening 20 minutes, he tipped Anderson's long-range effort around a post and then turned a swerving Robert Earnshaw shot into the side-netting.

At the other end, Lee Camp pushed a fiercely-struck Ambrose free-kick away for a corner.

Forest's pressure was finally rewarded in spectacular fashion three minutes into injury time - and the opening goal came from an unlikely source.

Long-serving centre-back Morgan wandered up from defence, picked up a pass from Paul Anderson and unleashed an unstoppable drive from 25 yards that flew into the top corner.

The struggling south Londoners' hopes of getting a much-needed first win in five games took another severe dent minutes after the restart when Lawrence received his marching orders.

After the defender misjudged the bounce of the ball from Camp's goal-kick, he stuck out a hand and prevented Earnshaw from racing through on goal.

Palace responded well to the sending off and only a fine save from Camp denied Ambrose for a second time, but it was to prove a rare opportunity for the visitors.

Tyson replaced Earnshaw 10 minutes from time and 60 seconds later he settled the game, racing on to Anderson's pass, rounding Speroni and firing home from an acute angle.

As well as creating a new club record of 12 straight home wins in the same season, the victory also keeps alive Forest's faint hopes of automatic promotion, putting them five points behind second-placed West Brom.

Meanwhile, ex-Forest boss Paul Hart and cash-strapped Palace remain a point from safety and haunted by the spectre of relegation.

Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies

"If we keep winning we will put pressure on - and that's what we will strive to do.

"It's great that we have equalled the record of home wins but I am thrilled about the fact that we have kept our 18th clean sheet of the season.

"We've hit the 70-point mark now and that's a fantastic achievement for a team who were fighting relegation at this stage of last season."

Crystal Palace manager Paul Hart

"With 11 men on the field I always felt we would get something out of the game.

"I thought we should have had a free-kick in the incident before Matt Lawrence was sent off so it was a bit hard to swallow.

"We kept battling and that's what we will continue to do because I still feel we can get out of this situation."
