Leicester   2 - 2   Coventry

Leicester 2-2 Coventry

Leicester 2-2 Coventry

Coventry mounted a superb second-half comeback to grab a point against fellow Midlands promotion hopefuls Leicester.

The Foxes dominated the first half and Andy King's clinical finish put them ahead after James McPake's error.

King then grabbed a disputed second when his header was adjudged to have bounced fractionally over the line off the underside of the crossbar.

But McPake lashed home a volley to reduce the deficit and Gary Deegan levelled from close range late on.

It was the classic game of two halves at the Walkers Stadium, with Leicester utterly dominant until the Sky Blues forced their way back into the game after the break.

Leicester's first-half display was full of attacking verve and they scored from their first chance, with impressive striker King grabbing his first goal of the afternoon.

After a clever pass from Richie Wellens, Lloyd Dyer whipped in a low cross and McPake's poor attempted clearance fell straight to King, who expertly placed the ball into the corner from 12 yards.

Leicester continued to press and Coventry keeper Kieran Westwood made good stops from Martyn Waghorn and Dyer, before King added a second in controversial circumstances.

Paul Gallagher dinked in a cross and King's powerful header bounced down off the bar. The linesman immediately flagged for a goal, with a variety of replay angles proving inconclusive as to whether the whole ball crossed the line.

If the validity of the goal was debatable, no one could dispute that the Foxes were good value for their two-goal lead. King should have sealed his hat-trick moments later but he prodded the ball just wide after a fine cross from the right.

Coventry failed to muster a single meaningful chance in the first half but they were given a lifeline shortly after the restart thanks to McPake's brilliant volley.

Martin Cranie lofted in a cross and Jon Stead's cushioned header fell to Scottish defender McPake, who blasted home past the outstretched palm of Chris Weale.

Moments later, Stead had a chance to grab an unlikely equaliser but he miscued his header way over the bar.

The home side's previous fluidity seemed to have evaporated and the Sky Blues pushed for an equaliser, which they almost got with 10 minutes remaining.

After Chris Weale saved brilliantly with his legs from Clinton Morrison, the ball fell to Richard Wood but his shot was cleared off the line by Nobby Solano.

Leicester continued to look jittery and their good work in the opening period was undone when the visitors grabbed a dramatic late leveller, which again had a hint of controversy about it.

Freddie Sears was in an offside position when the ball fell to Clinton Morrison on the left of the penalty area, but the linesman's flag stayed down and Deegan was on hand to tuck home Morrison's cut-back from close range to seal a precious point.

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson

"I have got no complaints with my players at all. If you think I am going to criticise my players… forget it.

"We were by far the better side in the first half. Second half - give them credit, they played much better. I think the draw is fair.

"I think it is a bit of a wake-up call for anyone who thinks we are over the line."

Coventry manager Chris Coleman

"It was a classic example of a game of two halves. First half we were poor, second we were good. It was a good derby.

"I spoke to the players (at half-time) about tactics and then I spoke to them about a few other things. They came out and gave me a response.

"They came out in spite of me, maybe because of some of the things I said to them.

"(King's second goal) was a tough one to call. Look from (the linesman's) view again and I am not sure he can call that."
