Watford   2 - 1   Ipswich

Watford 2-1 Ipswich

Watford 2-1 Ipswich

Will Hoskins' late strike helped Watford edge away from the drop zone and dragged Ipswich back into trouble.

Henri Lansbury opened the scoring for the Hornets when his 35-yard free-kick eluded everyone and sailed straight in.

The Hornets spurned numerous chances for a second goal before Jack Colback lashed home a loose ball to equalise.

Hoskins clinched a deserved home win when he latched on to Danny Graham's flick-on and rifled in a superb low shot from the edge of the area.

Ipswich were made to pay for a dreadful first half display, which saw angry manager Roy Keane haul off midfielder Owen Garvan after just 23 minutes with his side 1-0 down.

The substitution did little to improve the visitors' display as Heidar Helguson's header hit the woodwork seconds later for Watford.

Town keeper Brian Murphy then twice came to his side's rescue, keeping out a fierce Helguson volley and saving with his legs to deny Hoskins.

Ipswich improved after the break and forced an equaliser when Colback fired home after Watford had failed to clear Grant Leadbitter's corner.

Hoskins should have restored Watford's lead when he miscued from close range - but he made amends with 14 minutes remaining with an emphatic winner from the edge of the box.

Watford manager Malky Mackay on Will Hoskins:
"Will has been close to getting in the team in last couple of weeks. He's matured this season, he's had a child with his partner and settled down.

"He's undoubtedly talented but it's also about work rate and we have seen that recently - I'm delighted for him."

Ipswich boss Roy Keane, who kept his players in the dressing room for 90 minutes after the final whistle:
"Unbelievable. We kicked the ball out of play after three seconds and that set the tone for the night.

"We got back into the game and then gave another bad goal away - talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

"I'm disappointed with the whole package. I changed a couple of players to freshen it up but they say don't change a winning team - it could be true."
