Watford   0 - 1   Swansea

Watford 0-1 Swansea (UK only)

Watford 0-1 Swansea

Shefki Kuqi's early goal gave promotion-chasing Swansea the win in a rip-roaring encounter at Vicarage Road.

Watford had the better of the first half, Danny Graham and Lloyd Doyley having headers cleared off the line.

But in between those efforts Swansea counter-attacked expertly, Kuqi going close with two headers before nodding in a superb Craig Beattie cross.

The pattern continued in the second half, the superb Dorus de Vries denying Heidar Helguson with a stunning save.

Swansea remain the masters of the one-goal victory, having scored fewer (31) than anyone in the Championship and conceded the least (23).

Malky Mackay's Watford side find themselves just two points above the relegation zone in a congested table and will need to make the most of the visit of doomed Peterborough on Saturday to stave off the threat of the drop into League One.

John Eustace had the first shot of the night but hit the roof of the stand behind the goal from 25 yards before Danny Graham saw a header cleared from off the line by Alan Tate as the home side made a lively start.

Centre-half Martin Taylor saw a shot blocked from a deep free-kick before Beattie came close to giving the Swans the lead in their first attack.

Darren Pratley flicked on a long pass and, after shrugging off the attentions of Adrian Mariappa, Beattie drilled in a powerful effort which Watford's highly rated goalkeeper Scott Loach did well to beat out at the near post.

That chance sparked the visitors into the life and Pratley then crossed for Kuqi to climb above Loach, but the Finn saw his weak header crash against the base of the post.

Kuqi again should have done better minutes later when he headed an excellent cross from Cedric van der Gun straight at Loach, but did finally score at the third time of asking in the 18th minute.

Angel Rangel cut out a pass by Watford midfielder Henri Lansbury and started a lightning-quick counter attack.

Pratley found Beattie in space on the right and his fine early ball found Kuqi inside the six-yard box.

England Under-21 keeper Loach got a strong hand to his diving header but the ball found its way into the net.

Only an agile save from de Vries prevented Jon Harley from heading the Hornets level as they made a bright response.

Ashley Williams cleared from under his own crossbar to volley Jay DeMerit's header clear before half-time.

The opening of the second period failed to live up to the first as both sides struggled to control the ball on a difficult surface.

DeMerit headed over from a long throw as Watford attempted to exert some pressure while the Swans were content to rely on their extraordinary defensive record to see out the win, their 20th clean sheet of the season.

Watford manager Malky Mackay:
"I'm frustrated after that, just like my players.

"With the amount of chances we created we deserved something, if not all three points.

"That's as good as we have played in the first half. We peppered their area and the keeper made a great save to deny Jon Harley.

"We've got to win as many games as we can between now and the end of the season.

"There are a lot of points up for grabs and if we play like that the ball will drop for us and we will score goals."

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa:
"Mentally it was very difficult for us after the Forest defeat but we picked ourselves up and it is a good result.

"We need to keep it up for the rest of the season now. We defend as a team and our organisation and positioning is excellent.

"We make the right decisions and are focused and we are difficult to beat.

"Week after week my focus is to help the players to improve every day.

"They are becoming better players every day and we are looking to win each game and we will see where we end up.

"Everyone believes we can go up because we keep picking up results and winning and the players believe.

"But in football many things can happen. We can still improve and we have no time to look at the table."
