Ipswich   2 - 0   Cardiff

Ipswich 2-0 Cardiff (UK only)

Ipswich 2-0 Cardiff

A brace from on-loan Sunderland man Daryl Murphy eased Ipswich's relegation fears against play-off chasing Cardiff.

Cardiff, who face a winding-up order on Wednesday, were overrun throughout and fell behind when Jack Colback's cross was finished by Murphy from six yards.

An awful Ross McCormack clearance fell to Owen Garvan, David Marshall saved well, but Murphy had a simple tap-in.

Cardiff's Michael Chopra picked up his 10th booking of the season, meaning he will face a two-match suspension.

That will add to the woes of Dave Jones' Bluebirds, who await their High Court date over a £1.75m bill owed to the taxman.

They have the consolation of staying in the final play-off position.

Ipswich's unbeaten home run has now stretched to 12 matches as they move four points clear of the relegation zone.

The home side came close to breaking the deadlock after just eight minutes when Garvan's cross was met by the head of Murphy, but Marshall stretched to his left to superbly tip the ball behind for a corner.

At the other end, Chopra, who last scored a league goal in the 2-1 win over Doncaster on 30 January, tried his luck with an overhead kick soon after but it sailed just over the crossbar.

Ipswich striker David Healy tried to impose himself on the game, but his first effort was blocked by defender Gabor Gyepes before Murphy hit a tame long-range shot straight at Marshall.

Town, however, made no mistake next time around as Colback picked out Murphy with a superb pass and the striker was on hand to fire home - his first in five games - from close range after 18 minutes.

Cardiff failed to impose themselves and would have been two goals down had it not been for the heroics of Marshall.

Gareth McAuley latched onto Garvan's cross and his right-footed effort had Marshall at full stretch, but the Bluebirds goalkeeper managed to tip the ball round a post for a corner.

The visitors should have levelled in the closing minutes of the half when Chopra was given time and space in the penalty area, but the striker could only hit his effort wide of the left post.

Midfielder Shane O'Connor, who was making his home debut, impressed in midfield for Ipswich as the hosts held on to their deserved lead going in at the break.

Cardiff wasted an opportunity to level the scores within four minutes of the restart as Chopra sent his long-range effort wide of the mark.

Anthony Gerrard also tried his luck from distance but the defender failed to trouble Brian Murphy in the Ipswich goal.

And the Bluebirds' wasteful finishing proved costly as Roy Keane's men doubled their advantage after 58 minutes.

Garvan's initial effort was excellently touched away by Marshall, but Murphy was on hand to find the net with the rebound.

Murphy almost grabbed his first hat-trick in Ipswich colours after 66 minutes, but his right-footed effort was superbly kept out by Marshall, who produced another fine save to deny Pablo Counago soon after, as Ipswich held on for an easy win.

Ipswich Town manager Roy Keane:

"We've given Daryl Murphy a new lease of life. He could be in double figures already.

"I spoke to him in the summer about joining and he probably regrets that didn't happen.

"His biggest strength is definitely playing through the middle, he's getting chances in every game and I was pleased with his goals. They were poacher's goals, particularly the second one.

"We haven't scored anywhere near enough like that this season and need more.

"We try to score so many wonder goals after 15 or 16 passes."

Cardiff City assistant manager Terry Burton:
"Ipswich were by far the better team. They played better on the night and 2-0 flattered us.

"Everyone uses it as an excuse but we've got a lot of injuries, including players who would normally be in our starting XI.

"We never got going, though. We were second best in every area and there was so much wrong that Dave Jones could be talking to the players until midnight.

"We can still make the play-offs, but we'll certainly be a lot happier when we get some of our injured players back."
