Nottm Forest   1 - 0   Middlesbrough

Nottm Forest 1-0 Middlesbrough

Nottm Forest 1-0 Middlesbrough

Chris Cohen's strike earned Nottingham Forest a nervy win over Middlesbrough and equalled a club record of nine consecutive home league victories.

Cohen coolly finished off a sweeping second-half counter-attack to send the Reds second in the Championship table.

Forest edged a dull match with Majewski clipping the bar with a free-kick and Rob Earnshaw blazing over.

Boro's best chance fell to Leroy Lita late on but Lee Camp tipped his fierce 20-yard shot around the post.

Lita's effort was the first of several decent opportunities for the visitors in a frantic finale at the City Ground.

Emanuel Pogatetz almost snatched a point with a powerful header and Stephen McManus saw his shot blocked on the line by a scrambling Forest rearguard.

Until then Forest had edged a lacklustre match but had been restricted to a couple of Majewski strikes and half-chances for Cohen and Earnshaw.

However, Cohen's composed strike after an incisive move involving Dexter Blackstock and the inspirational Radoslaw Majewski proved enough to keep the pressure on leaders Newcastle, who beat Preston.

But Boro were furious that Lita was not awarded a free-kick in the build-up to Cohen's winner after a challenge by Reds defender Kelvin Wilson

Forest move above West Brom, who were not in action, but Billy Davies' men have played two more games than the Baggies.

The Reds last won nine straight home league games in a season in 1906/07 and 1953/54.

Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"That is as difficult a match as we will play this season.

"It was even through the first half, but I felt very comfortable in the second half and thought it was a matter of time before we would score.

"We've broken the record for home wins and it is another example of the concentration and desire that this young team has got."

Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan:
"I could not see them scoring but, fair play to them, they came up with the one goal that mattered.

"When you are on a good run - as Forest are - you get the breaks. Everything seemed to land at their feet but maybe it just wasn't to be for us.

"We looked comfortable against one of the best sides in the league but we needed a break. All the same I have got to congratulate my players for putting up a smashing performance.

"I still think that if we get a cutting edge to our play we have a chance of getting into the play-offs. There is no doubt that the players we have brought in have brought steeliness to our play."
