Derby   0 - 1   Swansea

Derby 0-1 Swansea

Derby 0-1 Swansea

Shefki Kuqi's second-half header saw Swansea stay on course for the play-offs in a fiery clash that saw both sides reduced to 10 men at the end.

James McEveley was lucky to escape red after a tackle on Joe Allen, but he was soon off after fouling Nathan Dyer.

David Cotterill's superb resultant free kick found the head of Swansea's new Finnish striker Kuqi who powered home.

Substitute Gorka Pintado saw red for a two-footed tackle on Robbie Savage, then Derby's Michael Tonge hit the bar.

That was the Rams' last chance against a mean Swansea defence, who have kept 18 clean sheets this season and have now gone 11 games without defeat.

Paulo Sousa's fourth-placed side are the only side in the Championship yet to taste defeat in 2010.

Swansea's star midfielder Ferrie Bodde was back after five months out with a knee injury, although the Dutchman was kept on the bench.

A tired-looking Derby side suffered a further setback as the impressive Kris Commons departed after 25 minutes with a suspected hamstring injury.

The Rams remained furious at the Pintado challenge on Savage.

Their players had to be restrained from a confrontation with the Spaniard as a mass brawl involving at least 18 players was sparked.

Pintado was the only player that referee Steve Tanner took action against.

But Derby could still be in trouble because they are already facing an FA charge after a touchline flare-up during last month's game against Nottingham Forest.

Derby manager Nigel Clough:
"Our players did nothing out of order.

"The officials were right there in the corner when it all kicked off and didn't show one yellow card to any other player.

"They are right there and didn't see anything at all and they are the ones who are meant to be in control of it.

"We don't want our players to walk away from that situation, we expect them to support their team-mate in the manner they did.

"No-one wants punches thrown or anything like that but they are entitled to be there to support a player, especially after a tackle like that."

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa:

Swansea played against 14 - Sousa

"We played against 14 but we had 12.

"Our supporters were outstanding to help us on a difficult pitch, it was difficult to play like I said against 14.

"We showed our spirit more than ever and it is difficult to beat us, we are well organised and I am very happy and proud of our lads.

"I don't want to speak about [Pintado's sending off]. I say we play against 14 and I don't want to explain.

"I have already spoken with the players. We need to control our emotions much better.

"If we control our emotions we don't commit stupid fouls."
