Andy Carroll's header three minutes from time snatched a point for Newcastle in a tight promotion battle.

David Cotterill looked to have claimed the win for Swansea, striking nine minutes after the break after good build-up play.

Gorka Pintado should have wrapped up the points for Swansea late on but mis-kicked from just eight yards.

The Swans were punished when Carroll rose highest to head home his ninth goal of the season.

But Carroll could find himself fortunate not to have been sent off moments before his goal after being booked for an elbow on Swans captain Garry Monk.

Swansea climb one place into fourth in the Championship after extending their unbeaten run to nine, but are 11 points behind leaders Newcastle in what was the battle of the two best defences in the division.

Both sides went into the game having conceded just 20 goals each this season, although Swansea had kept 17 sheets compared to Newcastle's 16.

The home side were forced into one change after Leon Britton picked up a back problem, with Joe Allen coming in, while Swans boss Paulo Sousa also replaced Mark Gower with Cotterill.

Newcastle wanted to get back to winning ways after seeing an unbeaten run which had stretched back to October ended at Derby on Tuesday.

Mike Williamson, Jonas Gutierrez and Leon Best all dropped to the bench with Fabricio Coloccini, Alan Smith and Peter Lovenkrands coming in as their replacements.

It was Swansea who applied the early pressure, though, forcing three corners in the opening two minutes, but nothing came of any of them before they lost defender Fede Bessone to injury.

It did not seem to harm the home side who came close to breaking the deadlock on 22 minutes when Spaniard Andrea Orlandi curled a 30-yard free kick just wide.

Newcastle replied seven minutes later when the Swans failed to clear a free kick and Coloccini's delivery back into the box found Kevin Nolan's head, only for him to put the ball wide.

Orlandi then had another chance to test Steve Harper from a set-piece but it was comfortable for the Newcastle keeper to collect.

Newcastle grew into the game slowly and on the stroke of half time Carroll's weak header from a corner was stopped on the line by Dorus de Vries.

Swansea started the second half brightly and had appeals for a penalty turned down when Nathan Dyer appeared to be pulled as he stretched for an Orlandi cross, and later Dyer drove wide of the far post from 35 yards.

Cotterill then sent in a cross which Darren Pratley drove wide, before Pratley and Dyer got in each other's way going for another ball into the box.

But then on 56 minutes Pratley delivered a ball along the edge of the box, Dyer dummied and Cotterill collected, cut back inside and fired Swansea into a deserved lead.

The Swans pushed for a second with Ashley Williams heading over from a corner, before Newcastle threw on striker Leon Best in a bid to get back into the game.

The visitors gained control and the Swans found themselves penned back in their own half for a period, although they were capable of hitting on the break.

With six minutes to go Pintado had the chance to wrap up the points but he completely missed Angel Rangel's squared pass from eight yards out.

Carroll then made Pintado pay, snatching a share of the spoils as he headed home Best's cross from close range.

Swansea City manager Paulo Sousa

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa:

"Football sometimes is cruel. I think everyone can agree with me that Newcastle are the best side in the league but we are the best team to play football.

"We were much better than them in everything, we deserved to win by miles.

"It was a great goal by David [Cotterill] with great quality. We had other opportunities to score.

"I think it was a red card [for Carroll] but the referee saw it differently."

Newcastle manager Chris Hughton:
"Credit to our players in the end, we pushed, we got a bit braver in the way we play.

"We knew that was going to make it very open at the end and probably we were going to see us getting an equaliser or Swansea getting a second, so I'm delighted.

"There's no doubt we could have played better. I think you have to look at us being the away team coming back from that.

"When you take that into consideration we are delighted with the draw.

"My very first impression [on the Carroll incident] was it was a ball he competed for and went to compete for but I haven't seen it again."
