Leicester   5 - 1   Scunthorpe

Leicester 5-1 Scunthorpe

Leicester 5-1 Scunthorpe

Paul Gallagher scored a hat-trick as Leicester produced a superb display to blow away Scunthorpe and emphasise their own play-off credentials.

The contest was over in the first half as Michael Morrison headed the Foxes ahead before Gallagher made it 2-0.

Gallagher's second - a free-kick - on 25 minutes and Martyn Waghorn's 33rd-minute strike made it 4-0 at the break.

Paul Hayes pulled one back for the Iron, but Gallagher had the final word, heading in his third on 73 minutes.

Gallagher's hat-trick was the first of his career and provided the perfect riposte to those questioning how Leicester would cope without leading scorer Matty Fryatt, who has been sidelined with a broken jaw.

The Foxes had failed to score in four of their last five matches - a run that has seen their automatic promotion challenge fade - but they were ruthless in front of goal against the team with the second-worst defensive record in the division.

Morrison gave the home side the lead after just six minutes, heading home from a Waghorn cross.

Grant McCann had a chance to equalise for the visitors but shot wide and he was left to rue the miss as Gallagher struck twice to put Leicester fully in control.

His first was from the edge of the area in the 15th minute following a cross from Lloyd Dyer and then, 10 minutes later, he fired in a superb free-kick.

Soon after Gallagher turned provider, swinging over a cross which was only half-cleared, allowing Waghorn to chest down and volley in.

It was a testament to the spirit of the visitors that they refused to lie down after the break, and their determination was rewarded on 54 minutes when Hayes converted Michael Raynes' cross via a deflection.

But Leicester, and Gallagher in particular, were not to be outdone, and he completed the scoring with 27 minutes remaining, heading in Richie Wellens' cross.

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson told BBC Radio Leicester:

"It's a very pleasing result. We've been due a result like that.

"Today we've taken the chances that have come along and ended up with a very good result.

"We've had a great result, but I think in terms of the performance, it was very good as well."

Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins:

"In the first half we got a real mauling. I decided to keep the same 11 on the pitch because I knew it would hurt them and wanted to make sure that they never wanted to have that feeling again.

"I didn't want to give anyone the easy option of coming off at half time and hiding away.

"I want this to be a wake-up call for the players. I know the result has hurt them but I now hope we can go on to better things."
