Cardiff   2 - 0   Peterborough

Cardif 2-0 Peterborough

Cardiff 2-0 Peterborough

Cardiff City revived their Championship play-off push with a comfortable 2-0 victory over lowly club Peterborough.

Jay Bothroyd had hit the post before the striker set up Chris Burke to volley Cardiff into a 30th-minute lead.

Bothroyd was the provider again when Anthony Gerrard sealed the win late on as the Cardiff target man flicked on Peter Whittingham's superb free-kick.

Cardiff's Michael Chopra hit the post in the final 10 minutes but suffered blows to Stephen McPhail and Bothroyd.

The Irishman followed fellow midfielder Darcy Blake off the field injured as McPhail suffered a rib injury after a challenge from Chris Whelpdale to deepen Dave Jones' midfield crisis.

The Cardiff boss is already without Joe Ledley and Gavin Rae so to lose both ball-winners in the crucial engine room is a headache for Jones.

Then the influential Boyhroyd hobbled off with a twisted ankle to further weakened Cardiff's injury-hit squad.

But Jones would have been pleased that Cardiff made amends for recent disappointments against the division's bottom club.

Not just for their second-half capitulation at London Road over the festive period - when the Bluebirds let a four-goal lead slip as Posh came back to secure a 4-4 draw - but after Friday's 5-1 humiliation at leaders Newcastle United.

Bothroyd almost gave the hosts a third-minute lead when his close-range shot from Chopra's ball hit the post, just Peter Whittingham's 20-yard free-kick was well saved by Peterborough keeper Joe Lewis.

Teenager Aaron Wildig, who replaced injured Wales under-21 international Blake early on, played a crucial part in Cardiff's opener as Burke broke the deadlock with his seventh of the season on the half-hour mark.

Wildig and Whittingham combined before the latter found Bothroyd with a pin-point cross.

The Cardiff striker headed the ball back across the goal to Burke who controlled on his chest before volleying it home from close range.

Bothroyd was a pre-match doubt after hobbling out of the Friday thrashing at St James Park but Cardiff were glad the target man passed a fitness test.

His link-up play was crucial against Peterborough and he set-up Whittingham twice more either side of half-time but the Championship's top scorer squandered his openings.

The battle between Jones, the division's longest-serving manager, and his former Stockport County player Jim Gannon, the division's newest manager, was dominated by the hosts in a game of one-way traffic.

George Boyd, Aaron McLean and Whelpdale did have slight openings but nothing clear cut as United, who have yet to win away in the league this season, tried to rescue a point.

But Gerrard's strike with 13 minutes remaining secured victory for Cardiff as the defender flicked Whittingham's free-kick past Lewis.

Striker Bothroyd claimed his 10th assist this season as he glanced Whittingham's teasing ball into Gerrard's pass as the Scouse defender celebrated his second goal of the season.

Chopra hit the post late on but Cardiff's second win in 19 meetings against the Posh was soured by their double midfield injury blow.

But Cardiff's immediate concerns are off-the-field as the club are due in the High Court on Wednesday as the Bluebirds face a winding up order over an unpaid tax bill.

Jones' triple injury worry

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones:

"After Friday it was good to get back to winning ways despite the state of the pitch. We dealt with the problem well enough but it is difficult to play our normal game on that surface.

"The grass has gone and only the fibres are left but due to our financial situation we were unable to pay for the necessary remedial works that could have improved the surface.

"We knew how Peterborough would set up after their win on Saturday and so we needed an out-and-out winger and that is why Chris Burke came in and did a good job.

"It was a comfortable disciplined win and as long as we kept doing the right things I knew the goals would come.

"The problem we have is that we are using the same group of players week in, week out and there will be games when things don't go our way."

Peterborough United manager Jim Gannon:

"We never showed enough drive or quality to win the game and the difference between the sides was the speed and movement of their front players.

"I am not expecting a dramatic turnaround at the club and it is going to be a long hard slog but at least I want the players to have the experience of being in this division."
