Cardiff   2 - 1   Doncaster

Cardiff 2-1 Doncaster

Cardiff 2-1 Doncaster

Jay Bothroyd's stoppage-time strike earned Championship play-off chasing Cardiff City their fourth successive win as they beat Doncaster Rovers.

But the goal was due to veteran keeper Neil Sullivan's error as he failed to keep out captain Bothroyd's weak late header from Ross McCormack's corner.

Michael Chopra's 16th this season gave Cardiff the lead but Gareth Roberts looked to have secured Rovers a point.

But his sweet 20-yarder was in vain as crisis-club Cardiff snatched a winner.

Roberts' left-footer looked to have made Cardiff pay for missed chances as Chopra missed two sitters while McCormack struck a post with a close-range header as the Bluebirds dominated.

But Chopra's strike-partner Bothroyd came to Cardiff's rescue in the dying minutes as he headed home his ninth goal of the season, albeit with a stroke of luck that the cash-strapped Bluebirds will take in such testing times.

Bothroyd's clincher, though, did not take the sting out of the post-match protests at the Cardiff City Stadium against the board and chairman Peter Ridsdale for the club's financial situation.

Ridsdale revealed in the week that money raised from a season ticket initiative, which was due to pay for January signings to bolster their Premier League push, would instead be used to pay off debts at the cash-strapped club.

Michael Chopra celebrates his goal
Chopra enjoys his second goal in a week after a four month league barren run

Cardiff face a winding-up order due to £2.7m of unpaid debts to the taxman - but the off-the-field problems clearly did not affect their players early on as the Welsh club took a ninth-minute lead.

Chopra gave Cardiff fans a much-needed lift when he superbly controlled Peter Whittingham's long, looping 40-yard ball before firing a shot across Sullivan and into the corner of the net.

The Geordie striker had not scored in the league for almost four months before this week, but this was his second goal in four days - he scored in their 6-0 rout at Bristol City - to give home supporters something to cheer about.

Chopra, who was also involved in an altercation with a Newcastle fan in midweek after appearing to be spat on, should have doubled the lead when McCormack put him through one-on-one with Sullivan.

But Chopra failed to add to his impressive season-tally as Sullivan's legs came to the rescue.

Bothroyd squandered a goal-scoring opportunity after good work down the right from Scottish winger Chris Burke before a McCormack header shaved the outside of Sullivan's right-hand-post from another teasing Burke ball from just six yards out.

McCormack also flashed a shot dangerously across the six-yard box before the ball was hacked clear.

But the dominant hosts had a warning of Doncaster's threat when Dean Shiels found space in the box and he was bundled to the ground in the box by Cardiff defender Gabor Gyepes.

Referee Graham Scott waved away Doncaster's penalty protests but Shiels and striking colleague Billy Sharp were looking likely up front.

Doncaster almost drew level two minutes after the restart when James Coppinger's angled shot was turned over the bar by Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall.

But the visitors took the lead in the 66th minute when Mark Wilson nudged the ball to the left-hand side of the box when Roberts fired in his second goal of the season.

Then a great block on the line from Cardiff defender Anthony Gerrard denied Doncaster's Shiels before Bothroyd ensured a second stoppage-time home win for fourth-placed Cardiff in successive Saturdays.

Jones hails Cardiff fans

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones said:

"We were superb out there today. We keep patching them up and sending them out and they continue to work their socks off.

"We know the circumstances and what we have to do as I can't bring anyone in at the moment because of the financial situation at the club.

"We have a young squad who are fit and look after themselves and they will keep battling away as they are all fully behind the club.

"If were bottom of the division and struggling the place would be like a morgue but the crowd kept shouting today and we won that late corner which enabled us to get the winner.

"I have never walked away from anything in my life and all the players have the same attitude."

O'Driscoll positive despite defeat

Doncaster Rovers Sean O'Driscoll said:

"I was very pleased with the performance because our second half was excellent after we had sorted out how to stop Chopra's runs.

"I thought we would go on and win the match even before we equalised because we were in total control in the second half."
